The common term for the "pull" is drive (emphasizing that most of the power comes from the leg drive). Explosive? Well, yes, if you have developed to that point, but strong in any case. The return is often referred to as the recovery and that emphasizes the fact that the rower is relaxing and recovering from the effort of the hard drive as well as returning to the position to take the next stroke. Beginners tend to err on the side of rushing the recovery instead of taking their time to get ready for the next hard drive. There should be no big rush to do the next stroke - not for most of your training at least.
