What does this code mean? What's the reason for… and how to avoid?

Nobody knows what those codes mean, because Concept2 don't publish a list anywhere.

The best thing to do is upgrade to the latest (non-beta) firmware version.

If that doesn't resolve it send your screen shot by email to rowing@concept2.com and ask them.

I'm always up to date with it.

Have you sent an email?

If you're running RowPro you'll need to CC it to Digital Rowing.

If your running RowPro you increase the chances of throwing the odd error.

Basically if you can hit continue and the monitor keeps working don't worry about it !

As suggested, I asked C2 directly… and got a reply:
Start with ensuring firmware is up to date. If it is not then do a firmware update.
Power up the PM and access the Main Menu.
From the Main Menu, select More Options > Utilities > Product ID. The version number will be listed as "PM Firmware Version" at the top of the Product ID window.
If 487 error occurs again you will need a replacement monitor.

I took the chance and asked another error I regularly get on my rowing machine:
If 42 error occurs again, try a factory reset by holding down the UNITS + DISPLAY and then press the reset button in the back of the monitor. Then let go of the buttons after you see ‘setting factory defaults’ appear on the screen. If 42 error occurs again replace monitor.
