C2 Logbook rows from RowPro, download as .fit fails

Postby Allan Olesen » May 3rd, 2018, 5:23 pm

My setup:
D1 with PM3, firmware 105.
Connected via USB cable to PC running RowPro 5.1 trial version (not expired).
RowPro is automatically uploading rows to my C2 Logbook.

When I log into my C2 Logbook and view a row, I have three buttons to download the row as .csv, .tcx or .fit.

For some of my rows, I can download all three formats without problems.

For two of my latest rows, I can only download as .csv. If I press one of the two other buttons, I get to a page saying:
"Sorry, it looks like something has gone wrong!
We track these errors automatically, but if the problem persists, please contact us."

(I have not yet tried contacting them.)

The two rows which fails are a row from a RowPro training plan and a custom row that I have setup myself, using the "Advanced..." button.

The rows which work are "just row" or custom rows. One of them was also setup with the "Advanced..." button. So I am not sure if there is a pattern here, or it is just coincidence.

Is this a known problem with a known solution?

Hi Allan

If you download the CSV file, what detail does it contain? I don't think RowPro saves stroke data for the training plan rows, so that could be causing the export of a FIT file to fail. I'm assuming that the FIT format is expecting the stroke detail to be saved to the logbook, but that's a guess on my side.

If the CSV file only contains splits and other summary information and not details per stroke, then that might be the issue for those specific rows.

The .csv contains one line per stroke, with the following information.
Number Time (seconds) Distance (meters) Pace (seconds) Watts Cal/Hr Stroke Rate Heart Rate

The C2 Logbook also contains the usual trend curves for this row. So the data seems to be there.

(I imported one row from a LogCard. This row does not contain stroke data nor trends. In this row, the download buttons are missing. So I think that the buttons will only be there if the data is there.)

I have discovered one similarity between the two rows where the download fails:
They both have recovery time included in the plan (the "R" in the Advanced setup of a row plan). None of my other rows have this. Perhaps this confuses the logbook.

So I have now modified the plan so the recovery time is defined as normal rowing time. Will see next time how it turns out.

For a start, download the update utility from Concept 2 and take the firmware from V105 to V108.

Cannot promise it will fix it but V105 is VERY old now so you want to be on V108, even this is like 3 years old now.

The problem will be in RowPro, they need to dump a whole load of the "Features" that don't work and just focus on the online rowing and the logbook, both of which are flawless in V4.3.

Thank you. Upgraded to 108 now. It is actually 6 years old, and 105 was even older. Seems I will need 108 anyway if I want to tryout ErgData with a cable to an Android phone, which will be my next attempt if I don't succeed with RowPro.

Also downloaded installed RowPro 4.3. Which includes a dead link to the page where you get a trial key. Very reassuring...

(I found the correct page for trial key myself, so I have 4.3 up and running. Now trying to figure out how I configure the upload to the C2 Logbook.)

Hm. Same problem with firmware 108 and RowPro 4.3. This time I did a simple custom workout with no rests, so it is not even the rests which make the difference.

Update:
Went back to RP5.1. Created a simple Advanced workout: 1:00+2:00+1:00. 3 splits, 4 minutes.

It uploaded fine, but I got this in the C2 Logbook:
Code: Select all
Splits
Time    Meters     Pace Watts Cal/Hr  S/M
4:00.0    921m   2:10.2   158   844   23   126
1:00.0    229m   2:11.0   156   835   24   121
2:00.0    232m   2:09.3   162   856   21   136
1:00.0   -230m   2:10.4   158   842   25   143

The distance of split 1 seems okay. Split 2 and 3 are a mess. This is only in the C2 Logbook. The RowPro logbook is fine.

Also, my stroke rate according to the C2 log fell to 0 when entering a new split, even though I continued rowing. And at the same time, my power and pace spiked. This is wrong both in the RowPro log and the C2 log. Perhaps a glitch in the new PM3 firmware so it "resets" between each split?

RowPro is great for online rowing and in the RP logbook you can just right click on the row and choose Export to C2 logbook.

You can also use the logcard on the monitor and use the C2 utility to read the card and upload from there to the C2 Website. This is a great backup as very occasionally RP can crash on you during a row.

I used the analysis in RP for about 6 months but its flawed and after a while you just don't need the anaysis, you know your heartrate training bands and waht your average HR will be for a given pace/distance etc before you start rowing. The only feature I use in the Online rowing these days. If your focus is data then look at ErgData.

Thank you, Carl. I somehow didn't discover your reply before now, but it is very much in line with my own findings in the meantime.

I mainly do 30 minute rows and the default splits is 1:30 or 20 splits for the row.

You can change this BEFORE you checkin to an online row to a maximum of 30 splits so your down to 1:00 for each split so loads of data really.

Unless your an Elite rower you kind of get to the point your don't need all the "Data" your then only interested in key results that include your average pace and average heartrate and average SPM for the row, the rest you just don't care.

The Concept 2 LogBook is now great, all the information that 95% of people rowing need.

Well, it is not because I want a lot of data about my rowing. I am mainly interested in data on some form which can be imported into the software I use to keep track of my other exercise activities. The .csv from the C2 Logbook doesn't fulfil this.

Anyway, I have started playing a bit with the PMI ActiveX control for Excel. That one gives me access to loads of data - not only per stroke but also during a stroke. I have already used it to code something I have wanted for months: A paceboat with continuously increasing power over time during the row. My next step will be creating a data logging tool using PMI so I can collect the data I want and export them in a usable format.

By the way, I think I have seen in another thread that you want strokes per minutes shown without rounding. I will be able to do that using PMI too...

The stroke counter is already in Ergdata.

I ended up giving up on Concept 2 making the most simple of changes in the monitor firmware and making a counter off the seat using a couple of Omron parts everytime it comes back with a photo reflective sensor.

Used if for a while, but like I said you get to a point where you don't need the data and certainly not stroke by stroke.

When your age 51 and still pulling a 7627m at 20spm or less for a 30 minute "training row" , so thats 1:58.0 pace you don't need "all the data" to tell you your rowing well.

RowPro provides actual people as paceboats, its all the motivation you need.
