Questions regarding Weight Loss?

Postby RobDMB » January 12th, 2017, 8:43 am

Hi,

New Concept 2 user. About 3 weeks into the Pete's Beginner Plan. Was wondering what everyone's experience is in terms of losing weight? Did you start losing weight right away or did it take some time. Do you build muscle/tone only in the beginning but not lose weight?

Thanks.

This will be a very subjective & individual topic. I lost weight fast for sure.. like 1 stone in just over my first month of rowing

But a pretty strict healthy diet change was essential to aid in the weight loss. After 2 months or so, i was getting nicely toned rowing 6-7 days per week at that time and had lost about 4ins off the waistline :) it was then i started doing weight lifting and body weight training a few times per week that really got me stronger on the rower, and muscled body i am real happy with. There was a time before i bought an erg that i wouldn't have dared take my top off, i was so out of shape and ashamed of my body!!!
"I don't have time" is the grown up version of "my dog ate my homework"

My goals are simply to keep fit/get fitter and continue to enjoy rowing on the C2 :)

Losing weight is not done by just adding exercise alone. Exercise improves your health and overall fitness. Weight loss is done by simply eating less than your body requires. (AKA a calorie deficit).

if one determines that they require 2500 calories to maintain their current weight then reducing that intake will cause weight loss. Now that being said the same will occur if you maintain 2500 calories and burn say 300 calories per day doing exercise essentially netting you 2100 calories (a deficit) I prefer to know my BMR (basil metabolic rate) which is the calories required by your body in a vegetative state (no exercise) which currently at a 10% deficit is 1960 calories per day to consume. Now as I exercise I can add those additional calories back in (i.e eat more food). This currently is about a 1.5 lb loss per week for me. I specifically use MyFitnessPal to track what I am eating. I am down 14 pounds since December 27.

So the simple answer is that eating more than the body actually uses results in a gain and less is a loss. Exercise offsets what the body requires / burns.

I got my C2 Mod D just over a week ago to cross train on

I bought a Model D in late September of 2016. I have struggled with weight loss for years and wanted to try something different. I immediately started training on my new erg, while also making changes in my diet. My dietary changes had mostly to do with portion sizes, as I already ate pretty well, mostly lean protein (chicken and fish), with vegetables. I started the Beginner Pete Plan on September 26, 2016, weighing in that day at 240 pounds. I have been religious about completing all of the workouts each week, sometimes adding an additional workout on the weekend. I have now completed 22 weeks of the 24 week program. I am weighing 205 pounds, with significant changes in my body. I also walk each day, do some elliptical training, and do light muscle training using a TRX suspension trainer. To answer your questions, my weight loss came off slowly. I was losing one to two pounds per week. As far as muscle toning, I saw those results quicker than my weight loss. I found the challenges to be fun and have participated in all of them since buying my erg. I am only 70K shy of my first million meters and have nothing but great things to say about rowing. Good luck to you.
