You could also try Capital Rowing Club in Washington DC - they row on the Anacostia River. They have a good group of committed rowers there. Probably winding down for the season now, however.

I thought the calorie estimator used a bodyweight of 175 lbs, not 150 (both the manual and the weight adjusted calorie counter state this). You can get a weight adjusted calorie counter from Concept 2 -- just give them a call.

I have much the same background as yourself; I have found that in addition to the general "power" exercises such as Squats, Rows, Deadlifts, Chins, Power Cleans (which I dont do, for I am concerned about injuries) many rowers focus more on hard pulls on the erg -- say 10 hard pulls with some period ...

Try dried fruit -- raisins, dates, dried cranberries, etc. -- mixed with nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.). Bowl of such a mix easily gives you 500 calories. Add a nice cool glass or two of skim milk, and that ought to do it.
