Re: Adding rowing to strenth training and running

Tough one. Your program sounds OK, especially if you stick to it! It’s hard to do all we want within the confines of a week. Not knowing your age, we have to deal with recovery. It’s hard to do all of it to the max, so picking a focus and filling in around that might make sense. For instance if your...

Re: Ankles and Knees

In a boat, there is more forgiveness on the joints it seems. Jumping off the footplate on an erg (or rebounding off it) on hard concrete flooring less so and an acute knee angle could cause soreness. Also pushing off a closed knee angle, as mentioned, doesn’t put you in the most powerful drive posit...

Re: Ankles and Knees

On the erg, I would get your shins to perpendicular and not overcompress. Flexibility / mobility, anthropometry along with girth will determine if knees open out, I think. It’s ok if they do a little, but like with most things, straight lines are more efficient. Being short, I try to get length in t...

Re: Mixed Rower / BikeErg Training Plan?

That’s how I’ve integrated bike too. Mostly because my focus is on rowing. And locking into a steady state in the bike is real easy - I can maintain a very steady hr on it and it’s very comfortable

Re: Am I "overtrained"?

Small things, but HR readings can change day to day. When it gets warm and humid, response changes. If you are dehydrated it does. Other stressors in life, sleep challenges, drinking too much, etc.

3.5” per split and only twicet. Couple extra turns on the tach and all those deadlifts and squats will see you good. Rate IS the multiplier. Sneaking up on it Jack in my normal mental state of anxiety. Thought I was there a few weeks ago. OTW practices tax the legs and dictate the schedule a...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

30’ W/U bike and erg
1K r26 @ 3:40.7 (blind)
1K r32 @ 3:24.9 (blind)

PB will be tough to get. Probably will need r36. Wasn’t as strong today.

Re: Rowing at later stages in life

To be 30 again...you are in your prime, my friend. Masters rowing sprint racing is over 1K. To me it is so much more friendly than a 2K and allows training to be more balanced. I feel like the strength training carries over a little more, or maybe the time spent doing weight training doesn’t negativ...

Re: Marc Megna podcast

Just watch Eric Murray’s training videos and you can see that he suffers just like the rest of us do. Yes, he has won a genetic lottery and has maximized its benefits through amazingly hard work, but it doesn’t keep him from hurting at his max efforts. Or if you saw the Boat Race this year and saw t...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Bummer about the Interactive Plan. It was a convenient resource. So I’m gearing up for a 1K test. Did a little pyramid to see how things felt: 100: 1.38.1, r34 200: 1.38.2, r34 400: 1.38.0, r33 600: 1.38.2, r35 250: 1.37.5, r36 8’ Steady State bike in between - not hard or easy just keeping HR stead...

The one 0.1 split difference messes with the perfectionist in me. I watched the monitor break from 46:40.0 to 46:40.1 during the end calcul...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

This morning: 3 x 1500m, r19, 1:59.6 interspersed with bike at UT HR for 5’ then 4 TGU each side to the high hip position with an easy 25#. 45’ total. Very tough pulling sub 2:00 at r18/19 for me for that length and with marginal recovery between. Damn near hurled after the last one. Maybe being fas...
