Re: Looking to buy PM3/4

on a tight budget

There's a PM5 C version which works very well.

However if already proficient, you could try using just your watch, as if in a 1x.

Re: rower wanna be

Good to see you back. Well done on reaching 50W. The problem is, rowing is a sport, and the technique has to be learnt. This comes first. You can see a lot here: https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/technique-videos Warmup is done by pulling for a few minutes using only arms and swing: th...

Re: Disappointed on my 1st 2k rowing

I started erging at age 62. Took me a year of 5ks twice a week to get close enough to 7 minutes to win all the races did. There wasn't much competition, and mostly weightlifters, who tend to think strength is all. I had the advantage of learning to row at age 15 to 21. A quick test for those who beg...

Re: Rower making a clicking noise, resistance doesn't change

Clicking could be the oneway clutch has been taken out and put back in the wrong way round; so who dunnit? In any case no resistance means its not working.

Re: How much can I decrease my 2k in a year?

5’11” x 146 x 16 Have a look at the C2 Rankings for your cohort / LWM in recent years. A 6:20 2k is (2000/380)^3 * 2.8 = 408W, so at your 66kg, >6W/kg, somewhat unlikely. 7:15 at 66kg is 4W/kg and not bad at all. If the 2k was at say 33, your stroke was worth 272/33=9W-min. As for training, use tha...

Re: visual migraine

If you see the same identical scintillating scotoma (SC) in both eyes, it's not an eye problem. But it could be a serious symptom, especally if you notice other effects. In this case go to the ER now. It could be due to one of the carotid arteries in the neck getting partly blocked, limiting blood f...

Re: 2k time trial for a new rower

My time was 8:02.7 (I am a 36 year old male primarily a distance runner). The 2k is the Olympic event for rowing, and very hard. Initial training for rowing a 2k requires the development of a strong stroke. This is mostly a technique problem, since the legs have to be engaged at high forces, but ar...

Re: Lower s/m and exertion

A 15km/h target is roughly 200Watt. There are not many lightweights (<75kg) who can do that. If you use the C2 logbook, you can see how your data compares with others' in your cohort. Your C2 ergometer measures Power and will show it if you press the right button (Units). Your work as described (607...

Re: watts and damper setting

During recovery, all the work done to come off the backstop becomes kinetic energy, which is then cancelled by the work done by the legs to stop us at the catch. We don't bounce, but keeping the leg muscles contracted when reversing travel direction, it all happens very quickly. Coaches call it feel...

Re: watts and damper setting

The energy used to accelerate a mass equals the kinetic energy gained or force x distance, the result is the same. If when erging our max cg speed is 1m/s during the pull, ke is mV²/2 so at 80kg, 40Nm. Doing this at rate 20 is 20*40/60W = 13W. At the finish we then do work on the handle with the arm...

Re: Achilles/peroneal tendonitis and other ankle woes: opinions and advice sought: dynamic, maybe?

what exactly are the ankles supposed to be 'doing' on a well-formed drive? That seems to be the crux. I would have guessed, when rowing, nothing. Have you tried shortening the stroke forwards, so that the heels do not lift? If necessary, a rope round the rail at 50-60cm from your toes can act as a ...

Re: watts and damper setting

fake that I understood most of that No need. Power, which is what the erg measures, is Force x Speed. Ergdata lets us see both as generated during each stroke pull. So we set the drag to a level that lets us use our best combination of the two, using standard rowing style as ilustrated by C2. Pull ...

The two were identical: 3x (8x(20s+r10s)+4'r), total on time 8 minutes. And still to be seen in the C2 boards.

Re: New rowing machine compared to old

My C is catastrophic and getting worse. It could do almost a 7' 2k in noughties, now in the twenties it won't go much below 10 minutes. I checked it the other day, with the triple Tabata (3x8x20s) WOD. On 2023 09 23 it worked at 213W. On 2024 08 26 it worked at 152W. To think I even oiled the chain ...

Re: Clutch bearing leaf springs quick question

If it doesn't work after oiling, you need to fit at least a new one-way bearing. I'd guess you need a press of some type to remove and refit without damage. The alternative is get a complete new wheel from C2. Oil cured mine, but I got a new wheel too for when it finally fails altogether, so now I h...
