What do you do when...

...your 30 minute row is going so well you feel you can beat your PB on a longer piece? I set up at the gym to row a medium paced 30 minutes as a warm-up before my scheduled weight training session this morning. Set out to go at 2:10 (which is a strong pace for me). Realized close to the end that I ...

Re: Tips for a shorter rower

My best advice is to have her row and watch the force curve. Despite her height, she should be able to generate a decent curve by focusing on the push from her legs at the catch. This helped my daughter when she got on the rower at age 12.

Re: declining or is this normal?

7k today and a little better. I tried to figure out what is giving first, and for me, it seems to be more general fatigue before breath. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1cPdA-9nozBD1WWvaGL4waAgaBRNQdTht Nice job. I doubt you are having lactic acid build up on these rows. Your fatigue...

Re: Fitness status

Maybe I missed it, but what do you weigh and what is your height? How much weight do you want to lose?

You sound pretty fit based on your description of your exercise regimen.

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

Very interesting thread about the history of indoor rowing and how the UK forum used to be... My 2peneth regarding this forum (FWIW as a newbie to erging and the erging community), im on instagram, facebook and youtube....though facebook is the one i use least. Its this forum i keep coming back to....

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Started the day with an early Rowpro 30 minute session with 5 other blokes. I wasn't planning on much of a time trial, but when I looked up at the screen after 500m, all 5 of them had blown me away! I finished the 30 minutes at 6800m with average 2:12/500m while everyone else was 2:00 or better. A h...

Re: BritishRowing Beginner Training Plan

Al, that training plan looks like a good place to start. I like the fact that they add a suggested non-rowing session each week (walking and/or light jogging). My only gripe is that they only suggest you row twice each week. If you get into it and like rowing, I would suggest a third session each we...

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

I'd be interested to know just how many 41 yo male rowers here with previous different sports backgrounds rowed over 8k for 30mins when they first discovered the erg. Any takers? Good question, Anth. Some of the members here have elitist attitudes which can be quite off-putting to new members inter...

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

I understood your comment perfectly. The fact that you immediately expect him to row 8k in 30mins when he has never rowed before is absurd. The OP has a background in running, that pretty much means not a lot to carryover into rowing. 2 Completely different sports!!!! That is not really true. I hav...

Re: Looking for training advice

I’d appreciate some advice from the experienced folks here. I’m a 68 y/o guy 5’7, 160. I’ve been rowing for a few years, but have had no coaching other than watching videos. At an average stroke rate of 22 I generally do 6,450 meters in 30 minutes. How do you use the stroke length and force measure...

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Even with no background Erging I know that under 40 minutes for 10K and over 8K for 30 minutes is very ambitious for this newbie despite my running background. I have no doubt I can work up to that but that's not happening now. I did 20 minutes this morning wit...

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

At your height and age you should be easily under 40 minutes and over 8K for 30 minutes. So you're not using your legs enough. Comments like this to a new rower on this forum only serve to denigrate and demoralize novices who come here for advice. The fact that it comes from one of our administrato...

Re: New to ERG/rowing. How does this 10,000m look?

Congrats on your first 10k. Great job! What was your drag factor for this row? As mentioned, your 17 spm is quite slow for this type of training. Most would go between 20-24 spm. I suspect your rate would increase to 2:20 if you were able to maintain 22spm over the entire length. Keep experimenting ...

Re: declining or is this normal?

I think you are over-analyzing and stressing over these recent failures. Don't. What you are experiencing is just evidence of your poor endurance which will improve over time as you advance through the BPP. Don't beat yourself up over a HD on a long row. It can happen to all of us. Get back on the B...

Re: declining or is this normal?

Could this be an exacerbation of your leg weakness you mentioned in your other thread? If so, perhaps you are over-training between your rowing and weight training. Perhaps the BPP is too much for you with your weight training schedule. If not, perhaps these are just the occasional stumbling blocks ...
