Re: ab wheel video - 71 year old
Thanks a lot for posting this video and link. I struggle with figuring out a core strength exercise that inspires me. Strong abs are really important to me, as I have other hobbies that require it, but I've never been motivated enough to get behind crunches or sit ups. I really like the ab wheel. It...

my guess is that if were you to gather up all the 20 year old males in this country and offer them $1 million to row a 2K in under 7 minutes (but give them no notice so no-one has any chance to specifically train for it) you'd find a fairly small number who'd pull it off. probably less than 1%, sure...

they should really fix that chart. concept2 is not doing themselves any favors by misleading people. i'd say swimming is 3 stars for the upper body, and 2 for the lower body. erging is the opposite. other than that, the chart is accurate. for sure erging hits the core muscles hard - it's the only ae...
Personally, I find ranger kind of inspirational. I'd hate it if he was banned, but I do wish he'd confine himself a bit more to his own threads so as not to drown out everyone else. Fact is, this guy appears to be, if not as good as he thinks he is, still crazy good at rowing. He's sitting atop the ...

you know, it takes two to tango guys. the reason the ranger threads go on so long is other people keep baiting ranger. IMHO - the guy's earned the right to toot his horn a little. maybe if he was some middle-of-the-packer his posts would be totally stupid, but he's the reigning champ for his age-wei...

However, I ran these articles by a cardiologist and he stated this is valid. Your cardiologist said what exactly? That intense, Tabata type workouts are effective? Or that regular aerobic exercise takes years off your life? After my uncles triple bypass a few years ago, his cardiologist had him wor...

My general experience is ball-and-socket joints (shoulders and hips) can be helped greatly with some basic and easy strength and streching routines. Knees seem to be harder to treat. So I'd say hook up with a good physical therapist. There is some basic preventative stuff that you probably need to i...

Hi Mick I did try some slow SPM workouts. I found it similar to what you described -- the flywheel slows down, so each pull is harder. My heart rate can get fairly high with this workout, even though I'm not pulling very good times. This is fine with me as building aerobic capacity is what I mainly ...

All I meant was that the drag factor is a more accurate measure of resistance than damper setting. Damper setting will control the drag factor, but if you want to get the same "feel" on two different machines you will want to set their dampers so that they each are reading the same drag factor. That...

knee pain and erging
I brought this up in another thread - I thought I'd bounce it over here to see if anyone else might volunteer some help. I took the plunge and bought a Concept2, but unfortunately I'm experiencing almost immediate buyers remorse. The problem is not the machine, which is a beauty, but rather my knees...

With re: to proper form helping your knees - I would expect the main problems would be overcompression and overextension? I.e. don't let the shins get past vertical before starting the drive, and don't hyperextend your knees at the end of the drive. This seems like it could be easily solved with som...

I was hoping to bump this up to stimulate some more discussion on rowing and knee injuries. It seems there is some inconsistent information floating around - some people turn to rowing after running hurts their knees, and do just fine. Others say rowing hurts the knees, or is even the worst thing fo...

koss sparkplug ear buds are cheap and do a good job of blocking out ambient noise. i use a ipod shuffle attached to my cap, with the headphones just dangling down. the ear buds stay very secure with this system as there is nothing pulling down on them, and the whole set up costs less than $70. audio...
