Re: Open Water Rowing

Paul, Great story! I know what you mean about rowing through people and being overtaken. It's the best/worst part of head racing. I'm curious about how you would compare the Zephyr and Maas Aero? The Zephyr is a couple feet shorter and a bit wider, so I imagine that its a bit better in chop, but slo...

Re: Rojabo Training

Hi Paul, I did Rojabo a few years ago and I did exactly the same thing that you did, going too hard on the efficiency test. I read the "improved" directions and I don't see it as a very practical advise. Having a test where you hold back isn't really a test. What I ultimately decided to do was to do...

Re: best app/subscription service for rowing programmes

I think that Eric Murray’s YouTube channel is pretty remarkable. He’s posting new workouts and doing them on video, while providing coaching tips. How many opportunities does one get to get advice from an Olympic gold medalist?

Re: do we need a heart rate monitor for sure while rowing?

While I understand where people are coming from, I like to race with my heart rate in view. My main thing is head races which take about 20 minutes in a single. I get very excited in these races, and tend to push the pace too hard in the first quarter of the race. This is especially challenging in a...

Re: First time on the water

Hi, I reply as someone who came to rowing later in life. I took it up in my late 40s after a couple of years on the erg. I can tell you that what you experienced is totally normal, and it gets better very quickly. There are lots of different ways to learn. In my club, we run a learn to row program w...

Re: do we need a heart rate monitor for sure while rowing?

Putting in my usual plug for the Polar OH1 HRM. This is a simple, reasonably priced BT-LE based monitor that goes on your forearm or bicep. I used chest straps for years and was skeptical that something on my arm would be reliable rowing. But I tested it and it works very reliably. Other great thing...

Re: HR data in iOS from ErgData

Probably not what you want to hear, but I couldn't figure out a good way to do this. I ended up using an apple watch to get data into the Health app and then use the HR monitor connected to the erg or RIM in the boat and saving that data separately (on rowsandall). I use health to basically just kee...

Re: Improving my time in a single skull

Hi, A couple of thoughts for you. 1. Ergs are calibrated so that the splits are similar to what you'd see in a 4+, which are faster than a 1x, so you should expect to be slower. 2. To get an idea of how fast you "could be", there is a calculator online where you can plug in your height, weight and 2...

Bored? Another online erg challenge series!

The fine folks at rowsandall.com have come up with a challenge series for the indoor season. This series is perfect for folks that are using ergdata, boatcoach, or painsled when they erg, because you can post your results automatically, and also check out how other racers approached the race in term...

Re: Age / Height / 2k results

Here's the analysis... https://analytics.rowsandall.com/2018/12/08/why-are-rowers-tall/ Two conclusions: 1. The trend is clear that taller rowers are faster, a rule of thumb is a second off the split for every inch of height for men, closer to 1/2 sec for women. 2. There is huge variation from perso...

Re: Age / Height / 2k results

Because I banged out the plots in 5 minutes. I just wanted to get a taste for the data.

I'll redo the analysis when I have a bit higher response rate. Right now, I've got about 160 responses.

Re: Age / Height / 2k results

I took a quick look at the results so far. I have about 150 responses. Here's a quick plot of the 2k times versus height for just the male rowers. https://quantifiedrowing.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/foo.png Here it is for female rowers https://quantifiedrowing.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/foo1.png I...

Re: Age / Height / 2k results

I analyzed all concept2 ranked results for 15 ranking seasons (2003-2018). I looked at the decline in performance relative to the results in the "younger than 30" group. If you look at all rowers and just put it on a plot, here's what it looks like. http://analytics.rowsandall.com/wp-content/uploads...

Age / Height / 2k results

Hi, Rowers often talk about the relationship between age, weight, height and rowing performance. Last winter I did an extensive analysis of how age effected rowing performance, but there is very little data on how weight and height effect things. I would like to ask a favor of all you rowers out the...
