I find that I have pain in my lower neck if I look to the side while rowing or do not sit up straight in the seat. With proper posture, the pain goes away for me immediately.

I found a paper on the biomechanics of rowing that had several conclusions and among the findings is the result that the non-experienced rowers had 19% less handle tension (which I believe leads to slower split times) than experienced rowers.
