Re: Low heart rate max?

Max heart rate varies by individual. Mine is high for my age, but based on the test parameters you mention, you are substantially faster than I am. Between the two, I'd take your heart rate and performance. :D

Losing form in ten weeks: a cautionary tale

Three months ago I was rowing daily and looking good to make my year-end goals. I benchmark with three workouts: "easy" is 5000m in 24 minutes; "medium" is 10k in 45 minutes; "hard" is 7000m in 30 minutes. Then I went on a trip where no rowing machine was available. I did multiple forms of workout, ...

Re: Finding an erg in Lisbon?

There are several rowing clubs in Lisbon. I would recommend checking out one of those unless you can find a crossfit gym or something. Most clubs would be happy to let you use the equipment as long as you demonstrate a competence on is and (most likely) pay to use it. http://www.rowinglinks.com/eur...

Re: Arms feel like doing more than my legs

I had this same issue for a long time. What fixed it for me was displaying the force curve while rowing. If you press the second button on the right during a workout, the force curve will be displayed. If your stroke is bad, it will almost certainly be visible in your force curve. It's supposed to l...

Re: Would love some advice on using erg with weight lifting.

I've had best results doing low intensity aerobic work in a fasted state in order to burn almost exclusively fat. Daily intermittent fasting from approximately 6pm until noon the next day, along with an hour of low aerobic activity burns fat incredibly fast. Lifting or high intensity activities suc...

Finding an erg in Lisbon?

I'm going to be in Lisbon for the month of August. The Concept 2 erg finder doesn't seem to include that city. Anyone know how/where to find an erg there?

Re: Weightlifting and 2K

I think it depends somewhat on where you're starting from. I rowed several million meters with no strength training and managed to maintain my speed but not improve much. This was over a couple years, so many people would say I didn't row enough. I was very thin -- 193cm, 80kg. I started with weight...

Re: Ranking Results and Damper

I want to start recording my results over 500m in order to get a ranking. Is there a mininum Damper level that I should use? Just in case this is the question you're asking, any damper setting is okay to rank with: there are no "forbidden" settings. Others have posted guides to choosing the setting...

Re: Tabata pace vs. anything else?

Both this and deadlifts are risky on the back. Try to keep your back in a strong position. Both sprints and DL are riskfull. Try to take care and if the back does not feel good, skip them. Agreed that it's possible to injure the back doing exercises that significantly strain it -- i.e. Tabata or de...

Re: Tabata pace vs. anything else?

If you do a tabata, nomatter how and you don,t end up in pieces on the floor, you didn,t do one. On the rower, the repeated starting will be a risk for the lower back I'm not as aggressive as "on the floor in pieces," but I am unable to do anything but gasp for about a minute after. As to the back,...

Re: Tabata pace vs. anything else?

A Tabata is supposed to be all out, but I've found mine to be fairly consistent -- to within 10 watts or so. That could be psychological. I have the watts displayed as I do them, so the barrier could be mental. I read that one researcher in Australia actually dumped a (small) crocodile into the pool...

Tabata pace vs. anything else?

I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYyx7RdKG3c . In it he rows a 5 rep Tabata and manages 504 meters. In the description he says that his 2K is 7:00, or at least says that 7:00 is equivalent to his performance on Tabata. This is puzzling to me. I just managed for the first time to...

Re: LP as a predictor of 500m time

I'll throw in my numbers for comparison: my LP is 570 watts/1:25 pace. My 500m is currently 1:38.3. I think that means some people think I'm slacking off on my 500m ;-)

Wow, I think that's understating it a bit. I can maintain that pace for about a 5K :-) Congrats!

Re: First Time Marathon

Pull the handle with one hand, drink with the other I've found that this is revealing of good technique for me. If I'm properly hanging from the bar (with my one hand positioned over the center of the bar) and engaging my legs, then this doesn't have a huge impact on my power -- wattage drops by ma...
