Re: Newbie trying to lose weight

I have yet to ever see anyone take drinking water to an extreme -- flushing the electrolytes from their body. People normally need to be reminded, because thirst is the moderator. I do think one should drink a little beyond thirst, in preparation for hard work (exercise). The muscles use water. That...

Re: Newbie trying to lose weight

....His previous sentence ended with "and pound water!".... LOL and I took that as row on water FAST and HARD (pound it). I guess this shows I don't row on water. LOL My apologies for misunderstanding at first. BTW, just like the opening-poster, I haven't really lost any weight, but I have a few ne...

Re: Newbie trying to lose weight

.....You can't drink too much water when you're losing weight.... EDIT: I must have read this wrong. I suppose this means exactly what I said before. Is this is a double-negative or something? lol You can't drink too much water = Don't drink very much water or Drink lot's of water. :) =============...

Re: Newbie trying to lose weight

.....You can't drink too much water when you're losing weight.... I disagree with this quite a bit. Many athletes are losers (physical/mental duration and stamina), because they essentially beat themselves by not being properly hydrated. Old secret in sports. One always want to keep their body hydr...

Re: 400+Pound newbie just did first row

I'd like to chime in with my unsolicited thoughts on this one. I am fairly new to serious indoor rowing, but I am somewhat of an expert on losing weight. Up until a couple of decades ago, I boxed. That required weigh-ins, which are very very different from normal walk-around weight. Since those days...

Re: Lack of Full Knee Extension on 1 Side: What's Up?

I did not see a final answer on this question. So, I am posting something I noticed today. For the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to perfect my technique and breathing. I have only officially been at this for 3 1/2 months, so please understand that I am a beginner still. This is just an id...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

At the foot of the Palisades, Big Pine. Are you on the Pacific coast? If so, which rowing club were you doing the trial at? Bob S. My apolgies for the thread detour. I know Big Pine. I think that is the turning point to drive up to Walt's Point (launch site) . Owen's Valley is one of the Seven Free...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

Lessons learned: .....stay to the plan (and chip away at the seconds over time/races) .....stay hydrated (I think I do, but I will be doubly sure next time) .....make sure I only have one guy talking to me -- until the last 300m (then they can scream all they want) ....get my blood pressure checked...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Yesterday was a huge lesson for me, being a novice rowing competiter (even in a fun race). I have a lot of points I want to discuss regarding my next preparation, but I probably should start individual/separate threads for them. I've had some time to absorb ev...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Especially, thanks for giving me some rational numbers to work with. This was bothering me so badly today, that I went back to the Rowing Gym this evening -- only with the intent to support some others in their attempt at the 2k. For some reason, after watching t...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

I don't mind going to a physician, but I am certain that he/she will NOT know a thing about rowing at extremes. Just imagine going to the doctor, and saying "my head gets really hot when I row intensely (at the max)." ...... $$doctor's answer$$ = "Take these pills and don't do that." lol I am lookin...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

Thanks Quatroux. Yes, I know I started out too fast. I was actually amazed that I was going so strong. (2:05 or 2:10)/500avg was the original goal, but I like even numbers. Thus the 2:00/500avg goal. ;-) I think I would have finished it, but it was like the two trainers behind me were competing in g...

Re: My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

This is really bothering me. I have been thinking about it all day. I am starting to wonder if it is related to my breathing. I think I am breathing okay (training in other sports), but I do have slight allergies (nasal). Maybe I should use a nasal spray before any serious attempts. But first, I wan...

My head overheating: first attempt at 2k

I am wondering if this is just a conditioning issue, and hope that there is some way to prepare myself to get past this awful feeling. When I go strong, my head starts overheating. It is kind of a feeling that my head is going to explode (not really a fainting feeling and no heart pounding). Today I...

Thanks so much for helping me understand this.
