Re: Small Breakthrough

Something interesting I noticed. Even a small increase in rate (say, 22 to 25) keeping the same pace will drop my heart rate. It is really hard to keep the pace from creeping up to something I can't maintain for 30 minutes or more though. I guess I'll just have to keep grinding out the miles until I...

Re: Tenshuu's Trials

After I posted, I looked closer at your earlier times and realized you already knew all about pacing. I do find the step up impressive. but by the time I got to it I figured "what's one more painful 2k?" And went after it again. I know that feeling :) I find all this real-time telemetry dangerous so...

Re: Tenshuu's Trials

Nice bump in pace/rate moving to intervals.

Now that you have a baseline pace (2:01), you might want to try and even out the splits a bit. With short rests, that's something that generally needs to be concentrated on. With longer rests, it happens a bit more naturally.

Re: Small Breakthrough

Sorry for all the posts. But this rhythm thing has just blown my mind. I closed my eyes and re-imagined my swimming rhythms: Training Breastroke: 2:2, a boring 1-2-3-4 march. Racing Breastroke: 2:1, an elegant 1-2-3 waltz. Training Freestyle: I would breath 2-stroke-2 (twice on each side) for a rath...

Re: Small Breakthrough

There's a rhythmic aspect to rowing: the ratio of pull to recovery (or to total stroke) times. Certain ratings are less uncomfortable than others. According to drag, stroke length and pull force, the pull takes 0.6 - 0.7s; so we can waltz at 60/1.8 to 60/2.1 stroke time, ratings 33 to 28. Which are...

Re: Small Breakthrough

But actually, if using Watt, you can achieve the same result as the Wolverine tables in a simpler way (well, at least I find it simpler - others may prefer the tables): Find your recent PB 2k session. (In the case of the OP, this will of course require some guesswork, since he is still waiting to b...

Re: Small Breakthrough

Interesting feedback on rate. Just an update: I tried another another 3x2000r2:00 at r25 to see how things worked. I immediate ended up feeling good at a 2:05 pace, but that isn't something I can hold yet for long. I could drop that to 2:10 and still keep smooth. However, below that things would go ...

Re: Small Breakthrough

There was a smiley after that QED :) I typically do 6-10k in a workout. I break it up in intervals so I don't get bored. Typically 30s to 2 min rest depending on how I feel and how long the interval is. My weakness is currently CV, so picked a HR probably in the low UT1 range (I've never tested my m...

Re: Small Breakthrough

Your stroke rate is way to low for regular training. 22 spm for ~2:17 pace looks fine to me :? Therefore: 2:17 pace is way to low for regular training. QED. :) I'm working on it. I still have a problem maintaining technique at higher rates. I had done very little erging before January. There was a ...

Re: Small Breakthrough

Thanks for all the supportive posts! mitchel674 : That's it exactly! Every once in a while I get a few strokes that seem effortless, but I get a huge boost in watts. I haven't pinned down what I'm doing different yet. Curious what a doctor needs to tell you? I seldom come across doctors who look hea...

Small Breakthrough

A bit of background on myself: I was a competitive swimmer throughout the 80s. Things slid a bit after that to the point that I have been pretty much a desk jockey for the last 10 years. I finally decided I needed to change that and since a 25m pool isn't going to fit in the back yard, I took up erg...

Re: Holly's journey

Hey Holly, I just started rowing on a concept2 after years of letting things slide and am loving it. One thing I found incredibly useful to pace myself and not over or under do it is to monitor my heart rate. Find a rate that gives a good workout, but you can maintain without "hitting the wall". The...
