Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

I have discovered the assault bike. I can easily get to the point that my breathing rhythm starts falling apart. I think this is an indication that your are all the way at the limit. I do sessions of 2-4 minutes at a time. The power displayed is about 80 watts more than I can do for an equal length ...

My two cents for the day: 1K, 3:35.9 @1:47.9. A yr ago, maybe a warm-up time. Now, it's actually hope.
Good to see that you are rowing again. Best of luck with recovery.

Re: BRIC 2018

Just saw this thread. Congratulations all to outstanding performances.
Are any of you going to the Euro Championships in Kopenhagen?
I am considering going there depending on how far down I can get my 2K.

Hessen Open

The Hessen Open indoor championships took place today where I was a participant and regrettably also the comic relief. The event was big and very well run, easily two dozen warm up ergs, bike erg on display, roomy and the air only slightly oxygen deficient. I was in for 1K and two time 350 as part o...

Happens to me from time to time (like once a year). No explanation. Seem to be rowing as always.
All you can do is grin and bear it.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!

I managed to get the 5K down to 17:31.8. The new drag factor is paying off. The cold air is also helping.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!

Congratulations Marius and Dangerscouse! I can't believe 775W on a ski erg. Surely it must be harder on the ski erg to produce that type of power output than on the rowing machine. Myself making progress. I managed to get up my drag factor from 95 to 120 (a big jump, took about 15 sessions of 20 min...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Even after a microdiscectomy, spinal leak, serious fall, and a total hip replacement this year and months of bed confinement, the rower is still calls. Went from a 2:27 pace 1K at first of Sept to 1:52 pace today. So far, no ill effects. Hopefully, we can all get back to a good place, if not good t...

Re: Drive with heels or toes?

The heels going down is an important cue for opening the back. If you really do drive off the heels you are probably opening to early. That's an interesting observation. I put much effort in to keep the heel down and feel that that has corrected my posture and gotten rid of my back problems. But I ...

Thanks. I'll think about getting one once retired. Currently I don' have enough room beside the erg.

Re: [In]decent Intervals

How does the bike erg compare to other stationary bikes you have been on?
Does it give you enough resistance to stand?

Re: Struggling to improve!!

Hang in there, 60K is not exactly pocket change. I do hope the experience will not destroy your love of rowing. As soon as you are out of there you can train any which way you want.

Re: Intervals: when to lengthen them & when to just do more

To take a more 2K centric view: say you want to train VO2 max. You could do one 2K flat out, hit maximal oxygen consumption at about 3 minutes then stay in pay dirt for 3-4 minutes longer. Now if you do 4 minute intervals at 2K pace, in the first one you will hit pay dirt after 3 minutes, stay there...

Big time!

Two winters back I sprinted more. Which did not go super, but got a 1.20 500 and 2.56.0 1k, but my 2k races where not great and super uncomfortable.
2:56 1K is as super time! Don' be too greedy.

Re: Drive with heels or toes?

I used to be on the balls of my feet much. I think this is a mistake. I have corrected it to the point where the heel lifts off at most 1/4 inch (subjective, objectively observed when rowing strapless: no liftoff at all). This was probably the biggest improvement in my technique. The rowing stroke i...
