Re: Antti Varis New Marathon WR (M60)

This is almost frightening.
It's too bad he does not go for the shorter distances also.
I am envious because they have such nice cold air up there in Finland,
probably all year round.

Re: Your favourite workout

Most effective: 1500 repeats close to 2K pace, long breaks (8mins).
For me 3 reps is a torture, regularly cave in on the third one (split += 1sec).
Often do only 2 (getting old).

Favorite: 3 x 10', 2 x 12' (8 mins break) about 5K pace.

This beats me handily (especially the 1min) even though I am 6 years younger.
Very humbling.

The heat is doing me in too: volume down, handle downs, pace down.
But we get two cold days now before it warms up again. Been reading that the warming climate brings more stable weather patterns. Hoping for a stable cold front soon.

Re: icebaths - tech

I would probably just use some plastic bags, filled with water and closed with a knot. If you use large bags and only fill them partly with water, you can store them "flat" in the freezer so you end up with large ice sheets which will have good heat transfer to the water when you later put them in ...

Re: icebaths - tech

I first heard about it on the sprint thread where Shawn Baker talked about it. Then I found Wim Hof on the net. I simply want to give it a try. No particular reason. Mostly I live in Frankfurt, Germany, no cold water in the summer. Sometimes dwell in Austria where we do have a glacier fed river. Wil...

icebaths - tech

I am thinking about taking ice paths and for these need ice cubes.
My first idea is to freeze water in the freezer in thin walled stainless steel bottles, then throw
these into the water. Is this a valid approach?
Is it worth investing in an ice cube maker?

How do you do it?

Strangely can't edit this post so must reply to myself. Sorry this version of the video is not subtitled, there is a subtitled version but I could not find it. For some background: in the previous Olympics Maijdics had the incredibly bad lack of being brought to a fall by an official who fell on her...

Re: What is the effect of simply being heavier?

I beat my PBs from 10 years earlier (36 to 46) significantly although being physically much weaker and doing much less general LSD work (used to bike a lot). The recipe was more intense work (primarily 3-4 x 1500 with long breaks and 20 min pulls). Technique was bad but maybe a little better and I w...

Re: Dropping 1.5 split seconds on 2k within a month

I'm ... not super mentally tough Does this mean you leave a little bit on the table? In that case you have the opportunity for some instantaneous improvement right away. Here is a desperate plan (day by day) Blocks of 4 days, every block shortens the distances, lengthens the rest (in proportion to ...

Here is a good frontal view of JDS doing 5:38.6:

Drag seems to be 5 and amazingly only one breath per stroke.
Does not seem to be too wiped out after the effort either!
