Decided to try sub-19 5k today and managed 18:58.3, on a DF of 116, so quite pleased to get a new PB to start the year. 1:53.8/25 overall. Splits 1:55.5/25 1:54.4/25 1:55.2/25 1:54.3/25 1:49.6/28 Have a feeling DF was a bit high for me at 5k, but will keep trying to figure this out in 2018. Average...

Watching the very best rowers on video (Mahe Drysdale, Xeno Mueller back in the day, the Sinkovic brothers, etc) it's pretty amazing how fast these guys rate in the boat and it looks smooth as glass. I know they make 2ks at rate 40 look easy! The momentum in a boat does help to push the rate higher...

Yesterday: 100m test in 17.6 at 1:28.0/500. Equalled my PB again. Slightly confused as sometimes what it shows at the end of the workout varies to what it shows in memory. It actually said 17.5 at the end but I'll go off memory. 6×1500m with 1:30 rest, alternating r22 at 5k+4 and r26 at 5k pace. 34....

Bit of a mish mash last couple of days: Yesterday: 2.5k OTW in the 2-. If you're wondering this is an extremely small distance to go OTW, but it was freezing and the coach wanted to keep an eye on is so we were turning every 500m! The fact that you're going faster at a lower stroke rate is a sign that your stroke is getting more powerful which is very much a good thing. I tried, and failed, for a 5k PB. Just after 2k I blew up and paused briefly then regrouped for a 17:59 finish (1:47.9 pace) I think with hindsight it was a bad idea to change from endurance to sprint without any of the foundation work needed.
