Buy a new PM5 and fit that.

Did you try the obvious and fit new batteries ?Viking wrote:I have an older C machine that stopped working with the meter after transporting the machine. I changed the pickup but nothing worked changed the meter still wont work. any suggestions as to what to try next. Thanks SG
It will not be the pickup unless the lead got damaged and the lead fails far more often on the model D pickup with the three internal wires, the Model C pickup is just 2 wires.
Does the monitor power up by pressing the on button or is there nothing ?
If the monitor powers up and doesn't register your rowing it can be a number of things.

Check the 3 magnets in the flywheel. If there is a lot of rust present on the flywheel it can attack the magnets. Once the plating protecting the magnets gets compromised they just disintegrate and loose all of their magnetism. the magnets are very small only 3/32'. I had one over here that I punched the magnets out, drilled the flywheel to 3.1mm and replaced them with 3mm neodymium magnets and loctite.Viking wrote:Thanks I wish it was that simple. Check the flywheel is not moving away from the magnets too far, this will also stop the pickup from working.
Its a pretty simple setup. What monitor did you try ? you have to fit another PM2 or if its a PM3/4 it needs to be configured for the Model C or it will not work either.

Thanks I will check the magnets. That makes the most sense. Over the years I have had several ergs. At my main house I have a D machine and a dynamic. A few years ago we took the c machine to our little cabin in the woods. That's the first time an erg stopped working. Thanks

Check the magnets in the flywheel are still okay with say a paperclip. They need to be in good shape or they simply will not induce any Voltage into the pickup which is just a coil of wire as the magnet travels past it.Viking wrote:Thanks I will check the magnets.
