PM3 Menu/Back Button Not Working

Post by rakserv » May 24th, 2017, 10:32 am

Hello,
I have an older PM3 that was working fine, but the Menu/Back button has stopped working.

PM3 Hardware Info:
200004381 3352003
7200-000056-310 Model D

The change display and change units buttons work fine.

i have opened up the monitor and inspected the board, there is not any visible corrosion.

i thought that i had seen a post that recommended replacing a super capacitor on the board, but i can't find it.

thank you,
-rob

Yes there is corrosion on the board. Usually this just takes out the menu back button. If the entire row has gone then there is probably some serious corrosion inside the monitor or possibly the keypad needs a clean and so do the button contacts.

So I opened up the monitor and there is no visible corrosion, only the menu/back button is not working. I tried to clean the button with some alhocol but still no luck. Any other possibilities?

Try cleaning the contact surfaces with an eraser and fine sandpaper.
Clean off any build up of crud from the button and make sure it's able to move properly.

Do you mean cleaning the board circuits where the menu/back button makes contact?

I haven't opened one up, so I'm not sure what it looks like inside.

Yes on the board, the gold plated contacts can get a build up as the carbon from the keypad breaks down. Also clean the carbon button contacts on the rubber keypad. Use only a cotton bud and some IPA. If you have a fiberglass PCB rework pen then you can give the gold contacts a quick flick but generally they don't need it unless the batteries have leaked. On the older 2003-2006 models I generally replace the entire keypad.

So I’ve tried using an eraser on the gold plated contacts and cleaning the button contacts alcohol, also tried swapping in a newer working keypad but still the menu/back button is not functioning.
