Rumbling seat/monorail w/ white flakes/dust

Post by hedake29 » January 10th, 2021, 5:17 pm

New rower, new machine (Model D)... barely 10k meters total. All fine up until middle of last row. Then started feeling a little rumble from the seat/rail mid-workout. Noticed white flakes/dust on the rail that looks like maybe the rollers are scraping it instead of rolling smoothly (just a guess). I've cleaned the rail and rollers with windex, and it gets better for a few seconds, but then seems to start again. It's also leaving a light line/mark on each side of the tope of the rail, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch in from the side that isn't completely coming off with cleaning. It doesn't feel rough, but the line is noticable.

Any thoughts from the pros? I'm assuming this isn't normal. Going to call them for support, but figured I'd try here too. Thanks in advance for any help.

It's perfectly normal and won't be a problem in a couple of million metres when you've finished running it in.

The top of the monorail is a user replaceable piece.

But you're going to be closer to 40,000,000m before you even need to consider that unless it gets some traumatic damage.

The rumbling is going to be dirt on the rollers that hasn't come adrift when you use the Windex.

As Citroen says, the lines on the rail top are just due to the seat rollers and are 100% normal. Check any C2 erg that has more than a few meters on it and you'll see the same thing.

As far as the getting things to run smoothly, clean the rail top and the rollers and it should be fine. Take a close look at the rollers and be sure you have wiped them clean, that's typically where you have most problems, but nothing that a minute or two of attention won't fix.

Good Luck

I suspect not great technique, those while flakes are from the lip of the roller breaking off. I would say your skewing the seat sideways with uneven leg pressure.

Have to admit I have a few chips in my rollers as well. Personally I preferred the old gray rollers, never had them chip bits off. The gray plastic must be stronger.

You will be able to feel the missing chips if there are any by putting your finger on the edges of the roller and moving the seat. They chip on the inside edge.

Clean the rollers and the monorail, the rumble will disappear.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know this is mostly normal. I don't doubt some bad form mixed in. Like I said, I'm a newbie and far from fit. Flexibility is awful, abs are non-existent, stomach gets in the way... but gotta start somewhere. I've watched multiple videos and am trying my best to get the proper stroke, minimize chance of injury, and get the best workout.

Gave it a good cleaning and then put another 3500m on yesterday. Fewer flakes/dust on the rail and no rumble. Will keep at it.

Thanks again.

I just use water with a drop or two of dish soap inside a spray bottle. Spray it down and then wipe it after every time you row. Wipe the rollers, the rail, and I also wipe the handle, found that I stopped getting blisters after I cleaned the handle. The elastic band from a pair of old boxer shorts works really well for cleaning the rollers under the seat, squirt some water on it, press it against the roller, and then move the seat along the rail so that the roller rubs against the band, and it will remove the black junk.

Make sure you do stretch and strengthen your core. Both of these will be valuable in avoiding injuries. Good luck with it all

Hi

We got two C2 about two years ago, and noticed those white flakes, after many hours of use there was still a lot of white flakes.

After talking to local C2 dealer we got new rollers, after installing them, the problem was solved. It must have been a quality issue!!!
