Chain oil again

Post by Schierbech » April 10th, 2021, 5:41 am

Hello, new user here, 3 trips rowed so far and really enjoying it…

I live in Denmark and are having troubles find the recommended chain oil, I have procured this type:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004VM ... UTF8&psc=1

If I can get used to the smell is the oil ok for the chain?

I know that Concept recommends 20W motor oil, do they mean something like this:
https://www.biltema.dk/bilpleje/motorol ... 2000044963

I think it is some nasty stuff to get on the skin…

I am also ride MTB and have something of this on stock, can it be used—it also W20 oil
https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=452

I have searched the forum, regrettable the 3 in one is not available in EU, I have to import it from US or UK—the import fee is alone 30USD ☹

I bet any of those would most likely work.

Regarding the motor oil, that's a multi-grade oil. I'm pretty sure that C2 recommends a single-grade (20w) oil. I think the one you linked to would be OK.

Another option is to use mineral oil. C2 also mentions that as an acceptable option.

https://www.concept2.com/service/indoor ... aintenance

("Lubricate the chain with a teaspoon of purified mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE® oil, or 20W motor oil. Apply oil to a paper towel, and rub the paper towel along entire length of chain. Wipe off the excess. Repeat if needed. Do not clean the chain with any kind of cleaner or solvent, e.g. WD-40®.")

More info on mineral oil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil

Here in the US it's quite inexpensive.

I would recommend 3 in 1 oil:

https://www.amazon.de/WD40D-701-345UK-3 ... 753&sr=8-1
Crikey!! That's about 3 times the price in the States! Dunno what's available in Europe, but I agree with Ombrax about locating some mineral oil at the drug store. Can't be that expensive?

Gun oil is a possible. Sewing machine or hair clipper oil?

I do not like brixit...

I will use the Ballistol oil...can the chain be removed and cleaned if it “clogs up”?

Sewing machine oil should work well . It has similar viscosity to 3 in 1 oil
https://www.amazon.de/s?k=sewing+machine+oil

Do not use fork oil, that stuff really smells bad

That's good.

However, the only way you're going to use up seven whole bottles of 3 in 1 oil in a a lifetime will be if you're doing equipment maintenance in a gym that has a whole bunch of ergs and they're all under heavy use. It only takes a little bit on a paper towel to do the entire chain. Anything more than that is most likely too much.

Thanks, yes I know it is a lot, but it was the cheapest option :D
