I'm buying a second hand rower tomorrow and going to pick it up, chances are it may be an ex gym machine but apparently its in good condition and i cannot complain about the price.
Could some people give me some things that i should obviously check before i buy.....and any tips on basic maintenance.

Check all the connection screws to make sure they are tight.Seth wrote:I'm buying a second hand rower tomorrow and going to pick it up, chances are it may be an ex gym machine but apparently its in good condition and i cannot complain about the price.

Take some strokes to check PM function and overall smoothness.
For Mod C and later, make sure it separates and reassembles as expected.
If all seems to be working well, it very likely is, most of the time it only takes a good cleaning to get everything in order, if there is an issue with bearings on the seat or bungee tension, an overhaul parts kit is about $50 I think.
Anything that would be expensive to repair should be obvious.

Right everything is fine with it i have it home, some costmetic stuff but for the price its worth it, the only thing is, the chain does seem to make a bit of noise when pulling out, like a winding noise, it has been well lubed so im stuck for ideas.
can anyone tell me what to look for or a way to quieten it down?
its a model C, dont know how old.

It could be the traveling pulley inside the frame, but tough to tell, if it feels smooth enough it's probably nothing to worry about.Seth wrote:Right everything is fine with it i have it home, some costmetic stuff but for the price its worth it, the only thing is, the chain does seem to make a bit of noise when pulling out, like a winding noise, it has been well lubed so im stuck for ideas.

I think the Serial number contains the information about when it was manufactured, the numbers near the beginning contain at least the Year, and maybe even Month and day.

For the Model C:
Serial number information
The label containing the serial number is located between the V of the flywheel support legs and is on the bottom side of the rower.
An example Model C serial number is 082203/1. The serial number represents the date the rower was boxed (mm/dd/yy). The number following the slash indicates the day of the week the rower was boxed.
Also, check and see the total amount of meters rowed.
