Question about shortened slide setup.

Post by freewheeling » December 2nd, 2007, 12:38 am

I gather that the recommendation for the gap between slides for a single erg setup is around 18 inches. The problem is that I don't have that much room, but don't want to use the stationary erg. I wonder what the effect would be if I set up the slides with a gap of just 10 inches, which is about the maximum room I have available? Is there a way that I could compensate for the loss of those eight inches by adjusting the tension on the slide bungees, or in some other way?

Yes you can set them 10 inches apart, which will stretch the outer ends of the bungees more than the inners.

I think you can adjust the bungees to compensate for this but I've not done it myself.

No need to adjust the bungees, but I would suggest that you have the flywheel end a few inches from the wall so the Erg doesn't bump the wall before the carriage hits the end of the slide.

The next thing to do is give it a try, it is going to work for you or it won't; and that is based on how far your particular stroke moves the erg during the stroke cycle. Remember that you won't have the regular leeway of the 18 inch separation so ease into it.

OTOH if the flywheel keeps hitting the wall, you may solve the problem altogether and create the extra 8 inches.

At first I thought you had a solution. The flywheel housing actually bumps the front, which isn't a wall but my roommate's TV stand. The "resting" position of the erg is, ironically, nearer the rear wall than the front TV stand. Hard to figure how the bungee balance impacts all of this. It may be the rebound that moves the erg forward against the TV stand. On the other hand, perhaps there's just not enough clearance and I need to put the TV stand closer to the, ugh... fireplace. It's not as though there's any real need for a TV...

Or get a bracket and hang the T.V. and row under it?

It's time for some major Feng Sui.

I'm on it. In the mean time I figure the starting point is to equalize all the bungee tension, and then make adjustments to minimize "bumping" at the end of the stroke. In a month I'll be somewhere else, so it's sort of an academic exercise.
