Does a model D make chain noise if it's well oiled? A little?
I tried a model D at a gym and it was making a lot of chain noise.

chain noise from Model D?
I just got done renting a car and I tried two Model D's. Both were making chain noise - noise coming from inside the chain housing.
One of the Model D's was in a store. It was very quiet, I was the only person there. The chain noise was quite loud. That was a brand new Model D, the salesman took off some plastic before I tried it.
Does the Model D need some lubing when it's brand new - do you have to do something to it to eliminate the chain noise?
The other Model D I tried was in a health club. There was a lot more noise there. I could hear plenty of chain noise when I rowed, but it's hard to tell how loud it was compared to the fan, because of the noise from people using ellipticals, etc.
My long term pace for rowing is about 2:15 or 2:20. It might not make much noise if people are rowing a lot slower. The staff at the health club tried rowing it a little, and I couldn't hear chain noise over the noise from the ellipticals nearby, but they were going like 2:35 or so.
I don't understand the discrepancy between what people here have told me and the Model D's I've tried.
I don't mind the fan noise at all, it isn't very loud and it's not an annoying kind of noise. But the noise from the chain is annoying.

Yes, though not as much as the C.larkl wrote:Does a model D make chain noise if it's well oiled? A little?
My model B that had the most quiet chain movement of the three.
I was surprised, upon getting a model C, how rackety was it's chain.
Overall though, the D is the most quiet of the three.

When I received my D almost 2 years ago it made a noise like a playing card in the spokes of a bike wheel. I opened the fan casing and a piece of polystyrene (styrofoam) fell out!
I can't hear any chain noise, just the noise of the fan.
