What was very apparent to me the first times I used it is that it gives you some sort of feedback on where you are currently sitting (fore/aft) and on how far back you're leaning at the end of the drive. But yeah, the main point is no more ass pain (I row up to full marathons).
For very short distances (100m, 1', 500m) at times I recall preferring to remove it. Nowadays I no longer bother, always on.
Personally, I didn't see the difference of the different inserts: the model without the inserts is cheaper (I don't recall if it comes with one insert or not).
The advantage of the insert is that if you fix the insert to the c2 seat (with the included velcro strips), it prevents the CR seat to move around during intense sessions. I did fix one of the inserts on my c2 seat: if I ever want to row without the CR seat, the insert stays on the c2 seat and doesn't bother me.
