The PM5 has some very neat new features:

1. Backlight
2. No more logcard, it's replaced with a USB memory stick
3. Wireless HR (no more support for the Polar dongle)
4. BTLE (will be added later so no more wires to get running with Android/iPhone)
worth waiting for in my opinion.

Both monitors are very good. If your are going to watch your hart rate closely the pm4 is wireless. This is the monitor I have
It also has batteries that recharge them selves. I'm a high school coach and mostly we youse the pm3. If these ergs are used
I would buy the one that looks like it's in the best condition .

I noticed that you removed your reply to drivetofast's post on the 28th instant, Doug. Why? Did you discover that the SkiErg was being offered with the PM5 on that date? Were you waiting to make an announcement of your own in the fullness of time and corporate indulgence? The bellweather role was thrust upon me, old son, and I'm pleased that the date of availability [????] is a case of fortune favoring the OP. I had no desire to either get or be your goat!

Note that the PM5 doesn't support Polar. So, that should make your choice straightforward. The heart rate info is interesting to use from time to time.
However, at the risk of getting really technical:
I have a Suunto dual belt, which pushes out Polar information to my Polar watch using one transmitter, and using another transmitter pushes out data that my PM4 monitor can pick up and use. But if you just have a Polar belt, the PM5 monitor won't pick it up, and the Polar dongle (which could be used on the PM3 and PM4 monitors) won't work with the PM5.
