I just noticed that the dynamic rower is now for sale ( http://www.concept2.com/us/indoorrowers ... c_home.asp ). Has anyone here tried out one of the newer prototypes or actual models? I'd love to hear how it feels vs. a model D, other dynamic rowers, or on-the-water training.

You should get some more reports soon since it was demo'ed at the Head of the Charles this weekend

I'm also very interested in any feedback on the new Dynamic Erg.

Could possibly be in the market for a new Erg in the near future and I'm holding off for now to see the results.

Will be going to the finals of the World Champs over here in NZ on the 6th November and I expect to give the new Dynamic Erg a go as it will be there at the Concept 2 stand.

What is interesting is the new Dynamic Erg appears to not replace the Model D or E but will be a different option aimed more at OTW rowers.

Having not done OTW, there may be a possiblity I just don't like it and would prefer to go with the now tried and trusted Model D.

There's a cable attached from the fan to the footholder, right? I've never been able to tell from the videos.

Nope. But there IS a long cable attached from the flywheel sensor (on the fan) to the PM4 monitor.

They were also using a cable (not an electrical cable of course) of sorts to the handle instead of a chain. I think that one version had one of kevlar, but it was still evolving at the time.

No cable or chain? Does that mean the legs just move freely without providing any force? Is this a completely different kind of workout?

Check the video. With the current erg you pull and the erg goes no where. In a boat when you row you are moving the boat. As you can see in the video of the dynamic erg the seat does not move much. You move more of the machine parts similar to moving a boat. You can see this too some degree in the training video section that shows how to row on slides with a current concept2.

It is meant to better emulate OTW (on the water) rowing for those who use the Concept2 for indoor training in the off season. It is not a completely different workout I would imagine

The handle has a cable that goes eventually to the stretcher. The stretcher has a chain that goes to the flywheel. The action feels similar to a model D on slides.

AH, that makes much more sense now. I missed that in all the videos and blog entries. I look forward to trying one someday.

There is a funny difference with rowing. You can see this in the clip featuring Lassi Karonen. You expect the body to move backwards but he actually moves into the other direction (the seat moving in the direction of the stretcher).

So the arms and trunk really have to work instead of relying on kinetic energy. Probably better for the back though.

Knowing the Concept2 products, I trust that the machine is good to go. I will put my Model D up on ebay and get a the dynamic erg.

If you want an unbiased opinion on the new C2 dynamic erg,as your unlikely to get one on this website, go to the rowing illustrated website. On that site several well accomplished on water rowers, that tried it at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, have written brief reviews on it.

Reading the reviews was interesting as none of them seemed to like it. They much prefered the Oartec Slider erg which was also on display. Most of them complained that the movement was nothing like that of rowing in a boat and felt more like a leg press or similar piece of gym equipment. Some even prefered the feel of a C2 model D erg on slides to the new C2 dynamic erg. Others that tried it placed it a distant 3rd or 4th behind the other dynamic ergs that they've tried.

I myself haven't tried it but look forward in doing so to see how it compares to my Aussie made Rowperfect erg.
