Pick up the phone and call your local Concept2 supplier.

It's my gym's Concept2. They're horribly incompetant in getting a technican to sort it out; if the problem was something easy to fix they said I could try and fix it.

Sounds like the chain is rubbing off the plastic runner to me. This can happen if you're pulling the handle too low.
Are you sure it's the machine and not you?

Yes I'm certain. I erg to the standard of a regular collegiate rower and my form is fine. I don't have this crank noise on any other C2. Virtually everyone I've observed using this erg (there being only one other Concept2 erg in gym, right next to it) has the same problem, but I guess that doesn't say much as they're just everyday gym-goers.

I have personal experience with a model D at a YMCA gym which sounded like the erg in the video. Pulled the acrylic slide from the bottom of the hollow beam containing the chain and shock cord/chain return mech and found the chain riding on the idler shaft alongside one of the chain idler pulleys. Lifted the chain onto the pulley. Sound eliminated. Worth a look imo.

Thanks, I'll take a look next week. Would I need one of those special star-shaped screwdrivers?

Break the fan section from the seat beam and tip up so resting on wheels and beam cap adjacent fan housing to get convenient access to the acrylic dust shield. Pull the shield from its slot on beam flanges. Might need a flashlight if not familiar with the rower guts. Quick inspection should reveal if the chain is riding the idler shaft. No tools needed only fingers to lift the chain on to the pulley. If no joy, this is a good pov (for both eyes and ears) from which to pull the chain, look, and listen.
No exotic turnscrew bits needed but showing up with an assortment of shiny probes in a pocket protector might lend a bit of Mr Goodwrench credibility in the eyes of the gym msnager. For the full Groucho Marx, carry a stethoscope.
