PM5 potential issue

Post by Anth_F » August 16th, 2019, 12:10 pm

After my 30min row today, and after the monitor had automatically turned off after the session, i pressed menu button to get the session details but the PM refused to turn on. Pressed all different buttons but nothing. I then removed the batteries and re-installed them and hey presto the PM is working fine again :?

I've owned my rower for years and this is a first time problem i've ever had with the PM5. Is this a common issue and could it be related to the Battery cover thingy i have read about?

I have a few of the new battery cover and the difference is possibly that its narrower in height, thereby preventing the batteries from moving out.

Realistically you could probably put 4 velcro dots (of the soft side) or some thin foam inside the old cover inline with the batteries to do the same thing.

I presume its on the lastest version of firmware.

Just out of curiosity, did you check the battery level when you re-installed them, and if so, what did the PM say?

Sounds like it's a bad contact issue, but if the batteries themselves are getting weak that could be a factor too.

Nah it's running the original firmware that was current in 2014 when the machine was manufactured. I've seen no reason to update it as everything i need is there and works fine! Aside from the anything over 4:15rest on intervals comes up a complete random number, but that is something i can live with.

So i gather what happened is that the battery or batteries had worked their way out of the cradle which caused the PM not to power up? I might try the soft thin foam padding thing if it happens again.

The batteries are @ 90% charge, but i've ran em as low as 65% before and never had any powering up issues so i highly doubt that to be the reason.

It's just bizarre that this is a first occurrence with this issue in all this time of ownership, and on a machine that has been in constant use for years and indoors only.

Hm. Sounds like 0x00FF seconds in hex. Not really wanting to tick over to 0x0100 seconds, I guess.

Not sure, but according to C2 this is one of the several issues linked to "Firmware version 12" which is what i'm running.

Update the firmware, its pretty easy with a PC just go here.

Download the utility and away you go. Your firmware version is way out of date, in fact it was the first version released so its hopeless because it has numerous issues that have since been resolved with V29.

Get yourself on the C2 mailing list and they e-mail you when a new version is released.

Can't be that hopeless... it's worked perfectly for over 3 years. This is the first minor issue i've encountered. And it's not even related to the firmware anyway.
