How often to do maintenance?

Post by Huopaaja » May 9th, 2020, 3:11 am

So I’ve got about almost a 1000k on this machine and haven’t done anything to maintain it so far, besides wiping the rail.
How often do you need to replace the pm battery (if you want to ensure it does not die during an important workout)? What about oiling the chain? Is normal bicycle lube ok?

C2 recommends 3-in-1 oil, which is super-easy to find if you are in the US.

You'll be able to tell when the chain needs some more lubrication - it will get a bit noisy, especially on the recovery as it retracts back over the sprocket, due to the stiff links. Or, you can run the chain over your finger and you'll be able to see the ones that don't move smoothly over your hand.

Details at the link below, where they suggest every 250 hours for home users:

The batteries, assuming you're using good quality ones, last for ages. 18 months on and circa three million metres and I think they're still on about 70%

Thanks, I just suddenly started worrying what if the pm dies and ruins my 100k. Safe to say not gonna happen with less than 2 months on the oem battery.

Since the PM will tell you how much battery life it thinks it has left, you can track that over time to see how quickly (or in this case how slowly) it will decrease. If you're extra-concerned about loosing power in the middle of a row that should allow you to have a good feel for whether or not the X% that is left is sufficient. Throw in some safety factor in your guesstimate, and you should be fine.

I would definitely oil up that chain before a big event like 100km

Can that even happen?

As far as I know, the sensor coil not only provides the RPM signal - it also provides power for the PM, and the batteries are only for powering the PM when the flywheel is not moving.

I believe that's correct, but it would truly be a feat to do a very, very long row like a 100k without taking a few breaks.

Connect a USB phone charger (aka wall-wart) to the PM5 with a USB-A to USB-B printer cable and it will stay alive as long as the mains is connected.
