PM5 firmware upgrade frozen

Post by Angus » October 3rd, 2020, 4:36 pm

It says it should take no more than 12 minutes, but it's been stuck at 36% for hours now. Their tech support is way until Monday morning and the web site says I should push reset if I can't upgrade (https://www.concept2.com/service/monito ... lash-drive) but doesn't make it clear that I can do that after the process has already started. The computer engineer in is reluctant to hardbrick this fine piece of electronics

You have no choice. Stick a ballpoint pen in the reset switch on the back of your PM5 and try the upgrade again.

Well, I didn't hardbrick it; hopefully nothing else is damaged as well and after plugging the stick in, unplugging it, turning the machine on, turning it off about a dozen times I was able to perform the upgrade. Hopefully this process will make further upgrades smoother. Thanks.

If you can connect your PM5 to your computer with a USB-A to USB-B printer cable that's always a better option than carrying the firmware on a USB stick.

No problems with a Window 10 PC using the Concept 2 utility, you must be using a Mac.

Eh? Angus said he's using a USB stick.

The first upgrade I made a stick w/Win8. This time I used Win10. Both times I had to go through this process of trying again and again to get the machine to recognize the stick for what it is. This time, however, I got the freeze. And it's a good thing I didn't wait for tech support to be open in the morning, because that freeze lasting several hours took half my batteries.
Hopefully, next time I'll still have a laptop to use.
