Fixed Model B: Handle Return Not Working

Post by munched104 » October 24th, 2020, 7:18 pm

I bought and am fixing up a Model B. It's almost done. Tonight I attached the chain to the fan and I have run into a problem and wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

The handle doesn't return. It pulls out.wirj no problem and the span freely spins. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I did replace the bungee cord inside but when not attached to the fly wheel the chain snaps back into place. It does seem like the wheel doesnt want to spin in the return direction.

Thanks for any help!

I'll try to post videos.

But before doing that replace your shock cord with a fresh new springy one.

The flywheel only spins in one direction, the clutch releases to allow the chain retraction while the flywheel keeps on spinning. My guess is that you have the routing of the chain and bungee cord incorrect and it's hanging up somewhere. Did you check all the pulleys and other parts in the return mechanism that may be binding? Citroen's links are the starting point.

This is a common problem with rebuilt Model Bs. It stems from the two flywheel support arms being too close together. The two arms then pinch the flywheel cage halves together until the arms encounter and pinch the flywheel axle, resulting in a slow or no handle return. To check this theory, slightly loosen the four 1/2" screws that hold the flywheel assembly to the arms (2 on the left, two on the right). This should result in a normal return.
To fix it, loosen the four 1/2" screws about 1/4". Now go to the four large 9/16" fasteners that hold the two arms and two footplates to the monorail. Loosen the one that is closest to the flywheel (on top of the monorail) about 1/2 turn. Now go to the one that is furthest from the flywheel (under the monorail) and tighten it about the same amount. Repeat this procedure until the ends of the two arms are pulling slightly outward on the cage halves. You may have to tap the ends of the axle to get it to go back to it's proper position, seated against the bearings. Hope this makes sense. JonW
