Height Difference Between Model D & E

Post by Oh Yea » December 9th, 2008, 1:34 am

I am looking to buy a Concept 2and I will either get the Model D with the PM4 or the Model E. The deciding factor is how much difference the 6" in seat height makes. My wife had ACL surgery last year and her knee still is sore at times but she gets around OK.

Is the extra height worth the cost?

My right knee is completely shot now unless I get a joint replacement and I have to use my arms to help get up from a sitting position. However, my model D is situated between a couple of items of furniture that I can use for hand holds to help me get up. If I were getting a new one at this point I would probably go for the E, since it is probable that the knee (and the left one as well) will just be getting worse.

In your case, it seems likely that she will be getting better and not need the higher seat later on. In that case, a chair on each side of a D might work as a temporary fix.

Model D vs. E

Post by Montanaandy » December 12th, 2008, 2:34 pm

I too have a bad knee and hip replacement and I have tried the Model E at a health club (have not tried the Model D but if looks similar to my Model C) and found that the height difference takes some getting used to. I was somewhat worried about losing my balance and falling off. This was alleviated somewhat after I rowed for a while but I don't know if I would want to row on one regularly/purchase one. I would certainly try it out before you make your decision. I also use the adjacent furniture to pull myself up after rowing. Andy

If you can afford it, get the E.

I used Ds and Cs at the gym, but purchased an E. The E is just overall a more substantial machine (not to suggest that the D is flimsy.) I like the extra height, though I did find I needed to put a small plastic footstool next to it to put my water bottle and towel on, as it is a challenge to reach the floor from the higher seat.
