Training

Post by [old] blanca » December 1st, 2005, 10:29 pm

i row novice for a DIII college. I was a walk-on in september and i've taken a liking to the sport quite a bit. I've yet to do a 2k, but my 5k time was 19:45, and that was quite a while ago. I'm already the fastest rower on the novice team (and bisweptual), but now it is offseason. I want to know what I need to be doing so that I can start stealing a Varsity seat in spring and kicking some serious ass.

if you guys could give me a few general guidelines or links, that'd be awesome. my coach is lending me an erg for my house while I'm away from college on winter break so i'll have unlimited access to it. should i be cross training though? just focusing on long pieces to build up endurance? what about trying to increase my Vo2max.

basically i'm just looking for some direction from the more experienced rowers out there. i want to kick ass in spring.

Check out the Wolverine Plan (discussion thread and download).
Very demanding but if you can handle it you'll be in great shape.

BTW. are you a woman rowing 19:45 for 5K?

After 3 months you are nowhere near your potential.

Or another suggestion of a plan that alot of people on the UK forum like is the Pete Plan. Its a very simple plan and very easy to follow over its 3 week rotation.
Im not in any way saying anything bad about the WP but it confused me when I first saw it.
But then thats maybe just me.

Find a rowing club where you can learn to scull, this will improve your technique hugely. Bad technique is the main thing that will mark you out from senior rowers.

I must have misinterpreted you. I took it to mean that after 3 months of rowing I should be much better than I currently am.
