That's a fantastic row, Frank. Again - Congrats! And thanks for all the gory details. I love the low SR. That's the way to go, I'm convinced.

My focus in the last couple of years has shifted to "rowing" as in on-the water. Haven't been going for PBs or SBs on the erg but rather counting medals at such places as Edmonton, Strathclyde and Worcester.

All the best,
MM

I've never owned any kind of athletic record before. Just keep working at it if you follow my schedule you have another 45 years to get yourself into record breaking condition.

Frank

PS: I didn't start rowing until 3 years ago when my right knee gave out on my after 27 years of running.

Congratulations Frank!
I think you can be even faster on the half marathon.
You don't need to drink at all.
Just drink a lot beforehand. The drinking probably cost you a whole minute.

I also think you can go under 2:45 on the marathon.
What's the record there in your age group?

I doubt that drinking cost me anymore than 10 or 15 seconds as it is also a rest period and gets my HR back down. I lost about 3 pounds during the race and that is with drinking about 16 oz. of fluid. In the longer races I drink because I've had cramping problems when pushing near the end especially in the marathon.

The 60-69 HWT marathon record is 2:48:35.1. Interstingly the 60-69 LWT record is 2:47:45.7. My last marathon in March was 2:47:08.6 so I should be able to get that record too. For my next marathon I will probably target just under 2:47 and pick up the pace if I'm feeling good.

Frank

I did better than average but that was about it. I'm sorry I don't have the exact dates and times but my best 5K was about 18:45, 10K 38:40 and marathon 3:14:30 all around age 40. I was a better cyclist than runner with some age group 2nds and 3rds in time trials in my mid-40s. Also did a few local triathlons and did well in them too but no wins.

One of my best running race finishes was the Mount Washington hill climb (8 miles one hill). I finished with 2:45 marathoners who were normally way ahead of me. A hill climb and cycling favor the quads. I seem to do better in sports like rowing that favor the quads over the hamstrings.

Frank

ChrisB,

My real problem with the marathon was that I lose too much fluid running that long. That 3:14:30 was on pace to be under 3 hours when the sun came out. The last 5 or 6 miles of that marathon I was stopping and drinking a full 10 ounce cup of water every mile. It was still a struggle to make it to the next water stop. Even on a hot day on the erg I don't suffer like that.

Frank
