Let me suggest this:

There are indeed new things.

All the time.

Those who do the new things usually win the game, whatever it is.

As human beings, our greatest asset is not mimickry, but imagination.

The most powerful thing in the world is the new idea.

ranger

You had better tone it down, Paul. If you keep working at your rowing, you might get good enough to have a chance of making the USIRT, but if you act out like this on the web C2 will exclude you, even if you row 5:50, beat Dwayne, and break Karpinnen's 40s hwt record.

Such talk is unseemly and undermines their consumer base!

ranger

Paul--

You are also upsetting me, and I am now a prominent member of the indoor rowing community, a former world record holder. On this web line, it is a no-no to upset prominent members of the the indoor rowing community.

You should listen up or shut up.

ranger

Just because you rowed some excellent times in your day doesn’t make your constant trumpeting of your own accomplishments and your habit of belittling the performances of others any less insulting. You have whined before about how Dennis Hastings and I have behaved “unsportsmanlike” towards you, and look at how you talk about us. I was chosen for the USIRT in 2003 and you weren’t. That’s your problem, not mine. Show some sportsmanship and integrity and leave me out of it. You think my opinion of you had any influence with Concept2? Then why are you still allowed to regurgitate your garbage again and again and again here on the forum? (Actually, I wouldn’t advocate banishing Ranger or anyone else outright – but I sometimes wish it were possible to limit the number of posts/words from the same person in a given time frame.) And then you show a complete lack of class by dragging Dennis into this and criticize his place on the team this year – without ever doing a test yourself. That’s not Dennis’ problem, and someone who keeps crying about C2’s lack of “ethics” should examine the ethics of his own behavior.

Want to know something about the USIRT? Pay attention, and I’ll tell you. See, I know this ‘cause I’ve been there and you haven’t. So you can make up all the lies and spread all the rumors you want, but they’re just based on your jealous imagination. On the USIRT, as the team travels to Europe together and dines together and goes sightseeing together and rooms together and practices together and races together and spends a lot of time together in intimate and personal contact – they don’t need an obnoxious jerk like you along for the ride. The USIRT is 12 different people and several support personnel from Concept2 who all have different personalities and training philosophies and political affiliations and tastes in music and literature and fashion and come from different socioeconomic levels and achieved different levels of education and so on and so on. One of the great benefits of being on the USIRT is to have a chance to talk with people with different points of view, and to learn from them. From time to time people on the team express a radical opinion and receive mutual support in spite of this. It’s not a utopian situation and people disagree from time to time and occasionally there is no love lost between certain members of the team. Team members have been known to be critical of C2 for different aspects of the USIRT concept and the C2 employees have always listened and made every effort to explain their policies and have placed the welfare of the people on the team above any other concern. The team manages to function as a unit because the individuals continue to show mutual respect for one another and observe the basic rules of etiquette. You would not fit in.

Ranger, the problem isn’t the selection process, it’s you. The process isn’t perfect, though it’s easier to criticize than to come up with workable solutions. Of all the people who have participated in the selection process over the past four years, only one person has registered a serious complaint. Only one. Of the people who once spoke out for you, who remains? (If anyone wants a few laughs, go dig up some of the posts from two years ago by people like Roy Brook and Micromonkey and compare them to what they say today.) So remember, Ranger, it’s not the process, it’s you. It always has been.

Here’s a challenge: when you respond to this, do it by saying something new. I say there’s a greater chance you will pull a 6:16 for 2K at WIRC next year.

Mike Caviston

I have never met Ranger, although I would like to, so I can't really comment on him personally, but he does come across, in this medium, as everything you guys have said. I know its hard, to know someone from their posts on a forum such as this. How many times have we read an apology from someone because their post came across in a way not intended. But Rangers are consistant and I read them as a lot of others do, it seems. I find this strange as Ranger is a Professor of English (I believe I read that in his posts, I apologize, if I am wrong), so, I would think he knows better.

Anyway, I hope to be in Boston in February, If you are there Ranger, I would like to meet you, I am albino and look remarkably like Santa Claus, being albino, I have poor eyesight and could walk right by and not notice you, so if you see me, tap me on the shoulder and introduce yourself. I look forward to seeing all the other friends I have made in the rowing community as well.
