Thirty-minute Thursdays Challenge

I row for weight control so I usually try to go the distance and "just row" at least 5000 meters a day (an idea I got from the inpiring Chris Willsie. Concept 2 Rowing Update, Fall 2004). But sometimes I need something besides "just rowing" to keep my mind into it. So, do what I call "Thirty-Minute Thursdays."

I will warm up for about 5 minutes, count those meters and calories burned in my log, then I set the monitor for a 30 Minute Workout for ranking. I just try to row more meters than I did the week before so I can watch the pace boat challenge me on my PM3 monitor. When the 30 minutes are done, I record my meters & calories and then "just row" for as long as I have time after that.

Then I enter my meters online and see how I rank among women in my age and weight category. It's inspiring to see who I'm ranked with.

So, I would like to challenge you Ducks in a Row to do Thirty-Minute Thursdays. Right now I'm ranked 43 of 60 in my bracket. How about you?

Sirrobin

Hi Sirrobin,

Great idea. I would like to try it. Right now I'm ranked 29 out of 58 in my age and weight class. Let's see if I better that.

Canada Goose aka Shannon

Count me in.....I'll do my best. I've had a bit of a layoff in the past month, but have been working on getting back into it this week.

Good idea! I'm ranked 32 of 58 in my age/weight group. 30 minutes is not one of my usual sessions but it would focus my mind to improve.

Sounds like fun, sirrobin!

I am 9th out of 20 in my bracket for 30min right now. Maybe I can add a few meters on Thursday.

- Krysta

I'm up for it! Not expecting to change my (slow) ranking as I just switched to morning workouts -- yawn. As long as I don't fall off again like I did this morning, I should survive --- seat got caught on towel, it stopped, I didn't! Ow! Got right back on, though, like a madwoman.

I did it! I beat my distance for 30 minutes last week -- by ONE METER!! Ha!

I have to learn to pace myself. I start out kind of fast and then I look at the lead I have on the pace boat on my PM3 monitor and think I should slow down. But then when I get near the end I realize that I might not beat my distance from last week so I pour it on to a break-neck race pace (for me) at the end! Ack! But in doing that, I realize that I can keep up that pace for longer than I knew I could. I'm thinking about trying a 2000 meter race workout next... Later!

I am now ranked 45 of 62 in my bracket of choice.

How did you all do this lovely 30-minute Thursday?

By the way, thank you to all who responded to this challenge. It added an element of motivation for me to know I'd be a flake in your eyes if I didn't do it this week!

Sirrobin

!!!
I did it ! I looked at my pb, worked out the pace I would need to do to beat it, then completely ignored that pace as a faster pace was comfortable. Shattered my pb - 6,894m which puts me 12/59 in my age/wt group! And I'm back on the 5,000m +/day board!

A GOOD DAY

I did the challenge today too. I beat my 30 minute distance by 76 metres!

Unfortunately I moved down one place in my ranking because mallard passed me !

Oh well, at least I got an extra 10 nonathlon points for my effort and my best ever nonathlon score (on any distance) of 824.

Plus counting my warm-up and cool-down, I rowed 11,495 metres for the day, pulling me into 3rd place on the Ducks until Ellen catches me again

Canada Goose aka Shannon

Sorry Shannon ...... You're still ahead of me on the Duck Board, and I've got 10 days holiday in France coming up with not a C2 in sight so I doubt I'll catch you there for a while if at all. Good rowing !

I did it too! My 30 minutes totaled out to 5576 meters (bit of a layoff over the past months while job hunting...) That was actually about 400 meters better than my last ranking. Sad, I know. Anyway, i'm now number 20 out of 21 (as opposed to 21 out of 21). Thanks for the motivation idea!

I did it, too - no accidents this time! Moved up a few places in the ranking, too (at the back of the pack, don't worry). Great idea, Robin!

See you next Thursday?

I just did my Thirty Minute Thursday - 6583m. No PB, but I was glad to finish. I was really tired and tempted to quit at 20 minutes, but kept at it because of the challenge.

- Krysta
(Swamp Hen)

July 21

Well, another week - another Thursday. I tried to do my Thirty Minute Thursday row this morning but my 4.5 month old only let me have 9 minutes. I will try again this afternoon. She is sleeping now - why can't she do that when we're at the gym? This might have to be a 2 or 3 part 30 minute row, and not a rankable one. But I WILL get my 30 minutes in one way or another!

- Swamp Hen

You go, Girl! I will rank you #1 in my book if you get 30 minutes in today - even if it's in 30 parts!

I did my 30 minutes this morning and beat my meters from last week. Take that you, loser Pace Boat!

But more importantly, I set a more even pace for me to follow next week when I "rerow". The first time I did a 30 minute workout I set an erratic pace - I didn't know what I was doing. If I wanted to "race" against the Pace Boat on my PM3 I would lose the boat in the beginning and then have to catch up like mad at the end. Hopefully, next week it will be easier.

Robin

QUOTE(Krysta Coleman @ Jul 21 2005, 10:34 AM)

July 21

Well, another week - another Thursday.
