No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Recommended life preserver-life jacket

Post by SummitSeeker » September 30th, 2019, 11:15 am

I am rowing into the late fall with my Edon TS515 and while I will use the pontoons for safety, I am wondering about a recommended life preserver/jacket for rowing. I have one that goes around my waist in the back, but it needs to be turned to the front, unzipped, and then inflated with a cartridge. I am a strong swimmer, but as the water gets colder up here in northern Vermont, I'd rather use a life jacket that is ready to go if I run into trouble. Thank you for your recommendations!

There are various options, and opinions. Search "life jackets for rowers" to see those.

My opinion is that if you are worried about the water being too cold, then either shift to the erg, or have a coach or friend in a safety boat accompany you. I have the waist belt type (the club requires it), but I follow my own advice there. Lots of erg time in the winter.
