I'll be worried, very worried, if I look out the window and see that on Valentine's Day (the snow, that is - maybe Janet will draw a heart in the sand for me)

Light breeze with some showers forecast and 27C for the Harbour City - perfect! Enjoy your day, Baz

Image 33 Lunies now on the Honor Board!

Bicycle Colorado is hosting its annual conference today called Moving People Forward...and I'll be there. One of the things that our public transportation planners are working on quite diligently is what they call a first and last mile solution, with the theory being that if you can help people get to the bus or light rail station from their homes by bike, then they would use the public transportation systems and take vehicles off the roads. Suffice to say, icy streets and no bikeway to the regional transport center means that I will need to drive to the transportation center in order to get downtown by bus. Still using public transportation...just can't for the whole way! Hurray for park-n-rides.

Image 45 Lunies!
An increase of 12 over yesterday for us!

Image Mega amounts of hearts!

Whew....just under the wire! Got my Valentine's Challenge completed! And judging from the uptick in numbers today, there were quite a few of us worldwide who were deadline driven! Over 6000 people have completed the Valentine's Challenge...that's good stuff!

Image Another episode...bunny trails of the mind

Every day I listen for the comment or look for the picture that's going to be a keeper for that day. Sometimes I rely on cartoons that capture my interest, and other times it's being at a conference - one where I did expect to get some energizing material. I'm an optimist - I see things and people in a positive light...not discounting that there is truly a dark side in the world, but choosing to focus on the positrons. Yesterday was no exception. These bike conferences aren't really all about bikes...they are about how people move around whether it's as pedestrians, on bikes or e-bikes, transit, or vehicles - we're just trying to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles. Downtown Denver has a SOV rate of 70 percent. That is huge in a city with a great transit system. Seattle, one of Denver's sister cities, has a SOV rate of 25 percent...dropped from 35 percent in 2016. That is mind-boggling.

"Going back to the past is our future." Dongho Chang, Chief Transportation Engineer, Seattle. This traffic engineer sees a lot of the city by bike, so much so that his twitter feed followers think it is a feed that must be written by multiple people. His mission is to have people move through the city safely...and Seattle has truly reduced pedestrian involved accidents and fatalities. I don't know about your city, but the Front Range cities here in Colorado sure can't claim that...in fact, these numbers have been increasing. Mr. Chang was clearly a favorite of the conference crowd yesterday, and he provided me with my keeper phrase of the day. You can read more about this inspirational guy with a different approach to getting work done in the attached link. As to going back to the past...he's not shrugging off technology, but he clearly seems to believe that being unplugged is not a bad thing for at least portions of your day.

I was just reading about the origins and history of Valentine's Day, and I read about it being celebrated (though not our version of it) on July 30 in some Eastern Orthodox circles. Hmmm, don't imagine you'll be converting any time soon. :D

And now for something completely different...

The team logged in 181,419 m yesterday!

Milestones:

Barbara G. crossed the 500K mark in "grand" style!

Noelle B. - personal best - longest continuous row (16,300 m)!

Top 3:

Rodrigo G. 39,672 (whew!)
Noelle B. 16,300
Chris T. 15,096

You've all really moved our boat forward! We're currently 134,786 m from taking 13th place overall. More importantly, we have several teammates who are within reach of personal goals and major milestones! Row strong!
When Concept2 opened up the Forum "doors" a little over 10 years ago (gasp), the Lunies were right there, ready to participate. We weren't really sure how we wanted to use the forum as a communication device. Capturing the numbers was a lot harder to do then than it is now (thank you very very much AJ and danwho). For a short while, we used the Olympic podium model and highlighted the top three meter generating rowers of the previous day. Since ALL meters are worthy meters, got rid of that podium model pretty quickly.

Quite frequently, bg and Minnie (aka Chris T) appeared in this podium listing...and would be queen of the boat. When I was looking for a graphic for Californian Chris, I found Minnie Mouse in queenly attire. It wasn't long before Chris became Minnie, then Minnie the Mooner as she would consistently row at least a half marathon 200 days out of the year, and now Minnie the hula-er. bg has run many marathons and ultras since we began - and some of her first postings were about things like running 20 miles the next day, and she was so sorry she couldn't add rowing meters! We started giving her the tennis shoe graphic on marathon days.

And that's your throwback Thursday - it's amazing to me that I would pick today to look back to the first stats...and it would just happen to be the tenth anniversary. There are no coincidences....hahahaha and holy cow and WOOHOO!

Truly amazing...and congratulations to all the Luna-tics on the achievement. I started rowing and joined the group around 2009 to help recover from surgery on my hamstring and whilst coming and going with other activities over the years, it is great to be part of this community, albeit from afar Downunder! Everyone is an inspiration in their own unique way, and that is what makes it great.

And must say, it has been hiking weather these past few days, so I've been Out and About in the bush...(lots of snakes Out and About as well :o )

And a special call-out to Kona - you are truly amazing, producing stats and stories each day!! Cheers, Baz
