Image Day 25 of 31...7th!

Much earlier today, the Challenge numbers showed that we had slipped to #8. A closer look showed there was a team atop the heap with a big error in numbers, and that's been corrected now. So still 7th...and still have the Ancients chomping on our erg caboose. And a week to go! Whew. Hang on to your erg handles, and erg handlebars. This is a WILD time for Challenge.

And it's a wild weather time here in the Rocky Mountains. Predictions are that we will have a 70 degree temperature drop from today's high of 81 to Friday morning's projected 11 F. Shiver me timbers and get out the hot soup.

Meanwhile, today has been a beautiful fall day. I've shared before that I volunteer with Bike Jeffco, an advocacy organization. Up until 2017, there was a two mile stretch from Denver to Idaho Springs where the only way a cyclist could get from A to B was to bike on the freeway. There were fatalities. 11 years of advocacy got funding for a bikeway called the El Rancho-Genesee Bikeway. It took two years to get it built, and we all celebrated with a ride on it in October 2017. A couple months later, our Bike Jeffco Chairman died unexpectedly. We spent the next two years getting permission from Denver Mountain Parks to put a memorial bench on that bikeway for our Chairman....and today was its dedication. So I'm late getting the numbers posted (not that you need to know why, but it's a cool thing when "victories" are sometimes a long time in process). Makes you want to share.

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

4.45 MM Ed

Image Day 26 of 31 ... 7th!

Oh Winter Is Coming....the Ancients have a bit of Game of Thrones on their collective minds. The day is still just starting for some, and there will be erging. And shoveling. But first, congratulations to Warnie (300 K Challenge meters), Ron (400 K Challenge meters), Paul (200 K Challenge meters), Eric (200 K Challenge meters), and Ian (100 K Challenge meters). 36 Lunies have now generated at least 100 K meters in the Challenge. Good stuff. We do what we think we can do, and then sometimes we do a little more.

Congratulations, Lunies! 50 million team meters is a huge milestone achievement!

Hello Luna-tics,
I was hoping to put some meters on the board for the Fall Team Challenge, but sadly the cord from the flywheel to my PM3 gave up the struggle and decided to die on me. I had to get a new one, which I did, but in the meantime I wasn't able to keep track of my rowing meters. So now that I have that replaced I'll get back to rowing, but I have a goal in mind to row a half marathon on January 1st and want to ask if anyone has a link for a training program. I looked on the internet, but only found one based on heart rate, and I don't have a heart rate monitor so that won't work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :D

Can't provide a specific link for training for a half marathon, BUT naturally we've got some suggestions from personal experience. Many on the team may also chime in with their specific suggestions.

I would suggest that you work up to 21,097 m slowly. When you are comfortable with a bunch of 5 Ks, then start working on the 10 Ks. After you get comfortable with a 10 K, I would throw in a 12,500 or two and then a 15,000 m. After that, I've known very few people who were going to wait for the half. They just go for it then. I'd spend a couple weeks at the 5K level, then work on getting to 10 Ks over the next three weeks. Make sure you can comfortably do multiple 10 Ks in a week before you bump it up further. I'd spend a couple weeks at the multiple 10 Ks in a week level. You have roughly 11 weeks before January 1.

Weeks 1-3....get to consistent 5 Ks
Week 4 ...multiple 5 Ks in a week
Week 5-7...get to consistent 10 Ks
Week 8-10...get to multiple 10 ks in a week
Week 11...do a 12,500 and a 15,000 m

Just my nickel's worth.

About those firmware updates...public service announcement

Post by Kona2 » October 10th, 2019, 4:51 pm

For the last couple of times that I tried to sync my data using ErgData, I'd get an error message that I needed to check the PM5 firmware. This always involves a "say whaaat?" response from me as I have to look up how to do this all over again. Since a new firmware update came out in September 2019 for the bike erg, I'm guessing that several of you Lunies have also experienced some of this fun. Indoor rowers and skiergs had an update in March 2019 so you've either uploaded the new one or you're living with the old firmware.

The first thing I learned was that the bike erg monitor runs totally off the battery (unlike the rower or ski erg)...and if you're using a flash drive that is 16 g or higher, you need a battery level of at least 80 percent to install the firmware. My PM5 battery was at 72 percent and it was not enough battery power. It takes a few (say 10-15 seconds) for the monitor to recognize the flash drive. It then offers you the opportunity to check the box to update the firmware. The update itself takes 5 minutes or so.

And yes, you can use a cable running to your computer and do the update without worrying about the battery level. That seemed less convenient to me, so I persevered through the flash drive issues. Must say that I had to call Concept2 twice to ask what I wasn't doing right when the flash drive wasn't recognized, or wasn't updating.

Thanks for the information Kona. That sounds like a good plan, I’ll see what I can accomplish with those tips in mind. I’ve done a couple of hm’s but it’s been a few years and now with the cooler weather coming to NY I know there will be more opportunities to row.

I wasn’t sure how much rowing you’d done lately so - conservative! I was shocked at how much cardio I lost in a few months when I was off the rower and bike!

I've been doing my rows as palindromes, and in multiples of 25,552. However, if I do one more 25,552 row to hit my goal of ~500k, my final total won't be a palindrome. So ... do I break my rule and make my total a palindrome or do I keep on with my plan to do 25,552 each day I row? I'm leaning towards making my total be a fun palindrome.

Mrs. P. votes for the palindrome on the total. It will be preserved in the final tally for the challenge.

I agree - you almost always have to manipulate the last erg session numbers when going for a total palindrome - although I suspect Mrs P can figure a way around that...

Actually, I think Ron is the master at planning meter uploads to provide interesting sequences both for the day and the season/challenge.
