So. Have you thrown down the galactic gauntlet and promised YOURSELF that you're going to reach a certain goal this year? Not asking you to share them...just asking if you have them. Meter millionaire? Completing all of the ranking distances for your erg? Half marathon. Ok, maybe you've only brain whispered these goals to yourself....but a whisper is as good as a shout in this instance. Once whispered, you're on the hook for completion....hahaha!
Yes Kona2, I do have a goal for next year. It's to get a 1 million meter season and to surpass the 5 million meter mark for total meters rowed. I was about 55-60 meters short of 1 million for this year, but it was still my best year since I started rowing back in 2012. That's what I'm hoping for anyway. Once warm weather hits I like to be outside as much as possible, but I think it can be done.

Thanks you guys for the congratulations on the 1/2 marathon row on May 1. It was our 39th wedding anniversary (we were both in the Air Force, stationed in Japan when we met at the young age of 19) and the first day of the new rowing season, so I thought I'd celebrate with a big one. We're trying to plan where to go for our 40th next year, and with this virus likely to return with a vengeance we are wondering if it's even going to be possible. For our 30th we had planned to go to Egypt and the surrounding areas, but that's the year the uprising occurred and travel there was banned. Any ideas would be appreciated.

So, back to the rowing topic: What an awesome video. It was fun to watch and TallErgs is definitely tall, I have much more room at the back of my rower when at full extension than he does. :P

I re-rowed the 4 min this morning with my damper setting at 10 like others suggested, and was 2 seconds slower than my last time, so I tried it again and was able to beat my previous pb time. Anyone needing some fast music for a 5 minute row should check out Swedish House Mafia's "Greyhound". Better yet, watch the video while you row. It's bound to make you go faster just by listening to the beat. The louder the better. I might just put it on a loop for the 2k :P Here's the link: https://youtu.be/Oe2KIVAHF-4?t=15

Alright, good luck with the 2,000m distance. This has been fun.
Yes, TallErgs is very tall. Which makes the rower a great machine to share! Very few pieces need adjusting for the 14" difference between us.

Congrats on the PR, well done! I was planning on being done the 4 minute challenge, until I saw your new time yesterday morning. That inspired me to sit down for another attempt. I manged to shave 1.5 seconds off my split for 10 more meters and a new PR.

Being competitive like this a very new thing for me. Having a team to inspire me to push harder, try again, has been wonderful. This challenge has shown me that I am capable of more than I thought I was, and that the rewards are worth a little pain.

My last 2K PR was in 2018 with a 2:27.0 pace. I was nervous about the 2K week when we first got started, remembering how hard I worked on that row. But I know I can smoke it now, and I'm excited to see how far I've come.

Well, once my back and butt stop yelling at me for setting two PRs in two days!

I saw Hamish Bond posted this from his New Zealand GARAGE.

Image
Extremely fast, but not the World Record. Looks like Josh Dunkley-Smith of AUS holds the WR at 5:35.8, but I think Hamish was looking at the 30-39 WR of 5:36.6, which has been held by Rob Waddell (also of NZ, but not in his GARAGE) since 2008. Rob's record looks quite formidable - maybe if Carol yelled at him ...

I attempted my first ever 2,000M time trial this morning. It was a spectacular failure LOL. Flamed out with about 400M left. I guess I came out of the gates too fast, but I WANT TO GO FAST. Will try again tomorrow.

Paul's Law says 1:47.5 I think the next attempt I need to probably start closer to that. I knew that before I started and was surprised at the pace for the first 1000m but it was unsustainable.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 5.4.2020

Post by Kona2 » May 5th, 2020, 10:53 am

It's going to be an amazing day! When I opened the sliding glass door to release the hounds for their first foray into their territory...I heard some sounds I hadn't heard for awhile! The cows are back in the fields near the ponds. It will be an even better walk with the pups than usual...we'll have to stop for a few staring contests between dogs and cows. Let me tell you about staring contests with cows. I worked with dairy cows and immunity transfer as a graduate student. I was a city kid thrown into a huge dairy operation during a couple of consecutive summers. Since we had to get samples from the cow and the calf as soon as the calf was born (visualize pushing a wheelbarrow with a 75 lb calf in it), we had to walk through these huge pens of cows every hour to see who was getting close. Sometimes I would accidentally walk up the back of a slumbering cow in the dark, but you learned to kind of walk fast through the pens at night - if only so you could get back to the grad student trailer to go back to sleep until the next check time. But it was the daytime that was a bit more tricky. There was always at least one cow who would stare you down during these walk throughs. After the first few walk throughs, inevitably that cow would start bully walking towards me as I made my way through the pen. The stare down had become a hunt you down. I walked faster! The dairy workers enjoyed this much more than I did.

I'm on the boards with a 7:26.2. I think my lungs are the weak link. Just feels like I can't get enough oxygen.

I'm glad to have a time in for the last event. I would've got a half marathon a few days ago, but we had a tractor break down and I had to go assess the situation. Now, I can focus on get maybe a few different categories of the marathon challenge.

That's one reason I love being on this team. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging. Just a nice bunch of people! Not only am I glad that I'm a part of this team, I'm glad you and the Tall One are too. I love the conversations taking place with everyone :) . I can't imagine a 14" difference in height. I'm 5'2" and my husband is 6' but he won't go anywhere near my rowing machine, unless it's to get by it on his way down the hallway.

I rowed the 2,000m row today and was 15 sec. off of my PR which was back in 2011. I did it in 9:30. Not bad, since I was shooting for 10:00. Tough one, but not as hard as the 500m or the 4 min row were. Good luck everyone on your 2,000 if you haven't done it yet and congratulations for those of you who have.

Following is a good article on getting oxygen around the body when rowing, I did post it a few years back and dug it out after seeing Brett's post. Whilst it is promoting a device (powerbreathe - I have one), the article contains some 'food-for-thought' information covering breathing and oxygen distribution for indoor rowers.

One of the factors I found when time trialing the 2,000M distance over the years is the 'leg fad' towards the end of the row and this is what led me to investigate it further, noting that leg drive is a key part of the stroke cycle.

Good luck out there. Blue skies and 23 degrees in the Harbour City today,Cheers, Baz B)
