...a reminder that the fight for our planet begins at home, in our communities...

Since it's Earth Day, and the bike group is getting ready to have a booth on alternative transportation and the sustainability challenge this Saturday, I'm sharing what's on my mind on these things. The sustainability challenge gets people to track some of the small changes they can make over a month, and earn points. Here's a couple of the things that I think are worth doing:

Rechargeable batteries: yes, they cost more in the short run...and usually that's the first thing we're asked "don't they cost more?" Many office groups used to have a bin where you could pitch in your used up batteries, and feel better that these were going to get recycled. And then the companies that do the recycling said they were going to charge to accept them, and so people threw them away instead. I bought a charger that tells me how much charge is in the battery, and recharges them within a few hours. Good for remotes, flashlights to make sure Pepe the skunk isn't on the fenceline, lots of things. There's an investment there, but I feel better about not throwing the spent batteries into the trash. Eneloop, Xstar, HiQuick. Whichever ones are cheapest because they all work about the same.

Plastic sandwich bags: this one is so hard. I bought some silicone bags of multiple sizes - works pretty well. Put food into containers instead of using saran wrap, etc.

Dog poop bags: there are some that purport to be biodegradable. Not likely that I'm giving these up unless there's some kind of digester that I put into the backyard.

Plastic bags: in Colorado they either charge you ten cents for them, or they just don't even have them at the grocers and other stores. It was amazing to see people rooting around in the recycled plastic bins to find a bag so they didn't have to pay 10 cents. Carry your reusable bags or even better the foldable totes with the solid boxlike sides in your vehicle. It was a habit that I found tough to enact at first, but second nature now.

Alternative transportation: if you can cut out even one or two vehicle trips a week, you're helping reduce greenhouse gas. And transportation is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas production. Ebikes make many more trips possible - and you can get to your destination feeling happier and healthier, especially if traffic congestion makes you want to drop the F bomb within the first five blocks.
In fact, some of the bike group beasties try to fully offset the miles they drive with the miles they pedal.

Do recycle what you can! Some of us didn't even do recycling much until the trash companies offered this - and surprisingly, it was kind of in tandem with when your kid(s) came home from school saying we should be doing this. Same kids that said hey, if there's a fire, you can't jump from your window, you need a folding 2 story escape ladder. Ladder's been in the bedroom closet for a long time....
