Susan, good to here that you're getting back into something nearer to fitness again. Are you planning on doing the CTC this month i.e 30 minutes? At least the ITC is no longer a HM.

It would be great if you're up for competition in Manchester on 3rd Feb. I'm expecting to be there too.

As to me.

After Friday's 6k I was out sculling in a single on Saturday. Surprisingly pleasant conditions between the spells of rain and wind.
Then a couple of days of rest.

Today back on the erg and decided to have a go at the CTC as part of my Holiday Challenge build up doing the 10k , 60 minutes and a HM by the end of the month.

I was targeting something like 7087m at an average 2.07.0 pace (this is what my recent 2k and 6k would imply. Once my pace had settled down I was holding 2:07.5 pace which I kept to over the first 10 minutes. Shaved that to 2:07.3 over the middle 10 minutes and started to look for 2:06s as I started teh last 10 minutes. Managed 2:06.5 for the next 5 minutes and then began to look for 2:05s, 2:04s and then ramped up until I was doing 1:56 at the end for an average 2:03.1 for that last 5 minutes.

In total did 7,111m (2:06.5 pace), which is my best result for 2 years and 1017 Nonathlon points. :D

I'l put off my 10k row till after BRIC.

2k Race at the British Championships

Time.............6:56.5
Pace.............1:44.1
DF................120
SPM..............37

This wasn't my best time of the season (that's 6:54.1) but good enough for Gold in the 60-64 Lwt category and a new championship record so happy enough with it given that the hot and humid conditions caused most people to be reporting slower than best times....and I wasn't pushed as 2nd place was only 7:07.

It was a great day out and always good to meet up with Mike, Marjorie and many others.

Now it's ''head down and arse up'' onto my new training plan that will hopefully get me to a faster time at the world championships in California on the 22nd of Feb and before that the English champs. in Manchester on the 3rd of Feb.

5k Time Trial

Time..................18:16.0
SPM....................35
Average pace........1:49.6

5k for the Indoor Rowers league.

13 seconds slower than my seasons best so far but still got Saturdays 2k in my legs so happy enough with it and sure I'll get a faster one in by the end of the month.

BRIC

Well BRIC is now done and dusted. And for me a couple of good results in the end.

After last Tuesday's strong 30 minute row my prep on Wednesday and Thursday was far less promising, as on Wednesday I aborted a 6x500R2 after 3, admittedly fast, reps. Then on Thursday I ended a 1000m attempt about 300m in, and just paddled home. Friday was tied up in travelling up to London and a bit of Christmas shopping for the family. So, a rather disappointing "taper".

Come Saturday I was up at 5:45 and arrived at the Velodrome at about 8am for my 9:30 race, having caught the last overground train from Camden to Hackney Wick that, for a while, wasn't cancelled.

Discovered when getting changed that I'd forgotten to pack my sports bra, so had to use my civvie one instead - fortunately not as serious as when I forgot my shorts - which has happened twice now, in Cambridge and in Boston  .

Unlike last year my warm-up erg worked OK and I got my planned 10 minute warm-ups in for both the 2k and 500m.

Did a good 2k, didn't go out quite so fast as at Cardiff two weeks ago but improved on what I did then with a 2 second faster last 500m.

Splits were: 2:00.6 (27), 2:00.7 (28), 2:01.4 (29), 1:57.0 (32) to just dip under the 8 minutes at the last with a 7:59.8. This is a big step up from BRIC last year when I could only manage 8:03.5.

I was unopposed in my 65-59 WH category but still pleased to have gone faster than the 60-64 year old women heavyweights: what I didn't do is beat Carol Woodward who set a new 60-64 women's lightweight record in 7:55.9, despite not being in top form :D .

In the 500m my first problem was that I forgot to take my water bottle down to the marshalling area. Carol was kind enough to offer me a couple of swigs but it was a rather dry warm-up and race at what is a very dry venue. The other problem was that my race erg was faulty. The chain was very 'graunchy'. No idea how previous users hadn't complained. I raised my hand and having first conformed that it was faulty they moved me and my registration to another erg but this resulted in a 5 minute delay for everyone on my (blue) side of the floor (sorry!). The new erg chain was still not perfect, but much better than the previous one and I accepted a slight high, for me, existing drag factor (126) to avoid further delay.

Nevertheless, after all that, I had another strong row: splits of 1:53.0 (35), 1:46.5 (37), 1:47.0 (36),1:48.5 (39), 1:51.5 (40) for an overall 1:49.2, which was 0.9 seconds faster than in Cardiff and 0.5 seconds faster than last year's SB.

I had come with two other members of my OTW club, Teign Scullers, and Brian (81) managed a bronze in the 500m. Lucy had unfortunately put on a couple of kilos (muscle from weight training!) recently so had to compete as a heavyweight. As a lightweight she would have come second. Also saw and chatted to lots of old friends from Sub 7, The Diamonds, Royal Navy and the other Indoor Rowing clubs. Saw some class racing by the British Rowing team, amongst others. And got Graham Benton, who had done 5:57.1, up on the podium with me. Never realised before quite how tall he is :D.

So now making plans to get to Manchester for the English IRC (3rd Feb) and maybe Copenhagen for the European IRC (26 Jan). And I've already booked my flights and a hotel for WRIC.

Meanwhile back to training with a 5k (for IRL), 10k , 60 minute and HM to do this month.

Back on the erg today (first row since BRIC).

Decided to restart with something shorter - the IRL 5000m. I last did 5k, in 20:52.1, on 8th November. My predicted time, based on my most recent best results, for 2k and 30 minutes, was 20:46.9.

Had a good controlled row and did it in 20:44.8 :D, which is only just outside last year's SB of 20:44.4.

Splits pace (spm): 2:05.4 (26), 2:05.2 (28), 2:05.2 (28), 2:04.7 (28), 2:01.8 (30).

New British Record in the 60 - 64 Lightweight Category (Yes I held the old one!)

Puts me top of the C2 world rankings too so happy enough....for now....but will try again soon as I want to get it under 1:50 pace.

I posted my thoughts on BRIC on the BRIC thread, but just to reiterate here - congrats to all who took part and thanks for putting on such a great spectacle for those of us watching. Medals, Championship Records, British Records, World Records - members of Sub7 deliver them all - most impressive.

Meanwhile I see:
TPK is continuing the recuperation and getting back to regular erging - nicely done Susan
AA has done an impressive 30mins and 5k in addition to the 2xGold at BRIC - congrats Marjorie and an interesting write up.
LGF had a very successful if slightly below target BRIC - looked better than that from the stands Richard - congrats on the Gold and thanks for the blog. That 2k BR is well within reach for you .... as are most of the others that you don't already have!
Rod not only doing Gold and CR at BRIC but also a new BR for 30 mins - stunning as always.
...and of course not forgetting Carol at BRIC who turned out top trumps!

I've been plodding along as usual with the previously reported change to my "SS" sessions. I seem to be obsessed with the numbers as I erg - takes my mind off the pain and threat of boredom but pace is dominant. Having started to try to HR cap my slower sessions, pace is dropping off and I struggle quite a bit with that. Also, of course, there's quite a bit or wriggle room in HR monitoring/recording which allows some liberties to be taken - and I've been guilty of that too. I've not tested my Max for years...and on observation it seems to have dropped off quite a bit in the last 18 months - but maybe that's just because I'm fitter and unable to push hard enough mentally to reach my max. In early 2017 I saw a 173, but lately nothing over high 160s even for sessions when I truly feel maxed out. For the purposes of the caps I'm using a 170 max. That gives me up to: UT2 - 132; UT1 - 144; AT - 150; and OT - 163 at 94%HRR. So for the steady state stuff I'm trying to stay sub 140 - hopefully to improve my woeful aerobic capacity over time.

3/12 Dumbbells and 8K @ 20spm, HR cap 139 for 33:00.0
4/12 10x1min r1. Target all 305m+; managed 5 then 4 slightly slower but with a faster last for 3055m overall so aggregate on target!
6/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20, HR cap 139 for 32:59.9
10/12 Dumbbells and 8k @ 20, HR Cap 139 for 33:32.9
11/12 8x500 r3:30. Should have been all sub 1:40. Did 1 and wasn't up for it. Slowed each subsequent by 1 sec to 1:43 to give an achievable target. Poor session.
12/12 AWL Pyramid but @ 20 spm with HR Cap 139 - target <2:00 pace. Under pace target 1:58.9 but HR up to 141 on 3 of the reps.
14/12 5kTT for IRL. Target was to try 1:51 pace for an 18:30. Got to 3800 on track but wasn't going to finish like that so backed off for 1k and sped up again for the last 200...finishing with 18:34.1 which is my best for some years so not so bad.

Rod - well done on improving on an already impressive British Records: best of luck with averaging under 1:50 pace on your next attempt. :D

Mike - good result on the 5k. There is definitely an art to guessing what pace is going to be sustainable, so kudos for backing off a bit and still achieving a good time.

Me. I'm continuing to work my way up the standard distances/times, hope to get up to a HM before Christmas. Today it was the turn of the 10k.

I did already have a time for 10k, but as it was the aborted HM I did for the ITC back in May, having decided I wasn't doing it fast enough for a HM to make it worth spending another 45 minutes on the erg, it was none too impressive.

This time I was aiming for 2:08-2:08.5 pace. Having gently negative split after hitting an initial 2:08.5 pace over the first 2k I felt strong enough to accelerate over the last 2k, with a final sprint hitting 1:52 pace. Ended up with a 42:33.2 (2:07.6 pace) which better thana I expected to do, is 10 seconds faster than last year's SB and just 10 seconds slower than the SB for the year before that - the year I also set the 65+ 2k BR with a 7:51.6.

2k Splits pace (spm) were: 2:08.5 (26), 2:08.2 (28), 2:07.9 (27), 2:07.9 (28), 2:05.7 (29).

Result is good enough for 1024 Nonathlon points and a No.1 in the 60-69 WH C2 Rankings.

4 x 2k capped at 20 spm

Average pace...............1:56.4
Average watts..............222

New session tonight....It's nearly a year since I've done a 20 spm session as fast as possible.

I do a lot of 20 spm stuff but it's capped at 65% mhr....so this came as a mighty shock....it was tough, very tough,...and quite slow given that I did 30 minutes at 20 spm 10 months ago in 1:56.7 pace.

Happy to have gone faster than that but I can see I need to work on stroke power....'cos I ain't got much!

Mike............Crackin' 5k....best for a few years is well worth a ''well done''.....seems I'm not the only one who's ''sped up at 60''!

Marjorie...........Great 10k....lookin' out for you now on the Nonathlon!

Yes, Yes, Yessss....5k under 18 minutes!

A Lightweight PB! Not quite an ''all time'' PB as I was slightly faster when just a young Hwt of 53 but ok for 61...for now...but maybe another go.....arghhhh!

Rod Congratulations on going sub-18 with a lightweight PB. You're showing great form at the moment.

As to my attempts to complete the Nonathlon...

Had a go on Tuesday at the 60 minute. Was aiming at 13,900m (2:09.5 pace) as that was roughly what my recent performances at 2k and 10k would predict. Of course as this an extrapolation rather than an interpolation if I were capable of going faster at 2k I the projection for 60 minute would be too fast.

In the event I set out at 2:09.8 and tried to pull that down to 2:09.5 by putting in 2:09s. I had been starting to get some cold symptoms (David had it first and has been in bed for several days now), but whether because of that or because the target was too ambitious I broke down briefly after about 27 minutes and my average pace, which I had got down to nearer 2:09.0 and a projected 13,900m slipped to 2:10, at which point I decided to bail out at 30 minutes. Did do a sprint over the last 1:30 of this to bring the average for 20-30m minutes down to 2:09.5 pace, so still a respectable 6,935m (2:09.7 pace) for the 30 minutes but meant I had to go again. Maybe I should have just throttled back to 2:12 and finished with 2:11.

10 minute Split pace (spm): 2:10.0 (26), 2:9.7 (27), 2:09.5 (27).

Anyway had a couple of quiet days. Did my regular 72 lengths/1800m swim yesterday in 64 minutes, which is OK if not fast, so thought I should be able to have another go today at 60 minutes.

Started off a little slower this time (mix of 2:10 and 2:11 pace rather than trying to hold 2:10 or better) and was simply aiming to improve on last year's 13,827m (2:010.1) by holding mostly 2:10s. Despite still being a bit sniffly better results this time - I finished :D.
I did lose it slightly 30-40 minutes in when I dropped down to 2:13-2:15 for a few strokes and again in the last 30 seconds when I was pushing sub 2:00 pace but this time pulled both back to end with 13,890m (2:09.5 pace).
Good enough for 1,023 Nonathlon points, but pretty pathetic compared to my PBs (14,306m, briefly a WR when I was 62 and 14,081m when I was 65).
Now 'just' the HM to do, in a respectable time, to clear 9,000 points.Maybe on Christmas eve?

10 minute Split pace (spm): 2:10.4 (25), 2:09.9 (26), 2:10.0 (27), 2:10.2 (27), 2:09.9 (27), 2:06.9 (29).

Lovin' that 5K Rod. 17:59.4 awesome! I agree with you that the 5k is the hardest TT to max out so cracking 18min and getting so close to you Hwt PB is very impressive indeed.

No less than two more events netting 1020+points Marjorie. Again mega impressive and no surprise it equates to top spot in the rankings. Well done!

My recent sessions have been the usual mixture of plod on, disappointment, and happy surprises!
15/12 Dumbbells and 8k @20 HR cap <140 in 32:52.3 (spot on!)
16/12 4x1500 5r. Wanted to do low 1:47s - managed just 2 before blowing up and paddling the other two. Very poor.
17/12 Dumbbells and 8k @20 HR cap <140 in 32:59.7
19/12 16x250 90r. Target all sub 1:36. Managed 9 then 6 in the 1:39s and back on target for the last. Pretty poor!
21/12 Dumbbells and 8k @20 HR cap <140 in 32:52.7 (.4 over)
22/12 30min TT for CTC. Set off at 8k pace to see how long I could hold it - despite never having erg'd an 8k 30 in my life! Managed about 4k but had to slow down before speeding up again near the end. Got to 7907m which is a recent best so not upset with that at all.

Mike - nice 30 minute effort there: your 8k target for 30 minute seems a bit like my 14k target for 60 minute - used to be able to do these things but it's still nice to get close.

Rod - there's some stuff about BRIC including an (uncaptioned) photo of you in the December Rowing & Regatta (the Magazine for British Rowing members) also some nice stuff about her records and quotes from Carol.

Me -

Finally got back on water on Saturday (I've recently been a bit frustrated by tide times, high winds or lack of people to row with), took a coastal double with our coach Mark Eastman out from Gale Hill Beach in Teignmouth and then up the estuary through Shaldon Bridge against a strong tide (plus river flow from the recent heavy rains on the hills). Bit hairy getting through the bridge where the river was running at 2:10 pace against us and very turbulent - took us about 3 attempts to get through. Equally 'interesting' coming back through the bridge's piers, at high speed, with the tide.

Sunday. day of rest.

Today. Half Marathon. Was looking for a time around 1:33:00 (2:12.3 pace) and tried to even pace it. I had put a small hand towel on top of my seat but by 2/3 in it was becoming distinctly uncomfortable so I stopped and got rid of it, taking on a swig of water at the same time, however lost about 17 seconds doing this and it dropped my average pace to 2:12.9. Worthwhile though as I could then negative split it a bit from there, and then found some power from somewhere to sprint it over the last few hundred metres for a 1:32.47.2 (2:11.9 pace).

Splits:
2500 2:12.9 (25)
5000 2:12.1 (26)
7500 2:12.2 (26)
10000 2:11.8 (26)
12500 2:15.3 (25)
15000 2:11.4 (27)
17500 2:10.9 (27)
20000 2:11.3 (26)
21097 2:05.7 (30).

That's 1,063 Nonathlon points and, for the moment, I'm leading the Nonathlon with 9,197 points from 9 pieces, all over 1000 points :D. Can't see 1st place lasting that long as Jus (Justine Renton) is sitting on 8,259 points and only needs to do a 5k to go top.

And I'm also only 3rd in the 60-69 Women's heavyweight HM Rankings with Ann Wopat (65) having done it in a WR 1:28.52 (2:05.2 pace) - that faster than me for any piece I've done over 5k!

My bottom's still a bit stiff, though I've avoided the chaffing under the arms I experience when I did the FM in April. And I've created a 1600+ calories hole to fill over Christmas :D .

Am down for on water outings again on Boxing Day, Friday and then we've got Fun Races on Saturday.
