Great row today! 7K in just under 30 minutes. Did intervals of 2 minutes hard and then 2 minutes easy for the first 26 minutes. Then I went hard for the last 4 minutes to ensure I hit my 7K in 30 target. Just started reading 'The Boys in the Boat'. Loving it! Both fascinating and inspiring at the same time. Thanks to all who've recommended it. Happy rowing all! I finally feel like I am hitting my rowing stride for this season. Two and a half weeks until my vacation in Ireland. Gonna try to be very consistent up until then.

Way to go John! Keep up the great work!

I am taking it a little easier this season; shooting for between 2.5M to 3.0M this year, and not trying to set any speed goals. So far I am injury-free, so it must be working!

The SkiErg is where I am showing most of my improvement; I have shaved 20% off my times for specific distances. I try to do 25% of my distance each workout on the SkiErg.

For the first time I can remember, I do not need to lose a few pounds to have a healthy BMI for my employer's annual health checkup. I am already in the healthy range. So I must be doing something right!

I hope you all are having a great summer!

That's great, Jim! Way to go! And John, I'm happy to hear you're doing so well. Have a great trip!

My shoulders are improving and I've been working on technique so not to anger them. :) My physical therapist has cleared me for 15 minutes at a time, at least a couple of times a week. I will have to be very cautious when adding time.

It seems that with the hormonal changes that go along with my age, my joints have become very prone to strain. I will have to spread my exercise out between a variety of activities to avoid trouble. But I feel better now than I have for the past year, so there is hope.

I'm back to calorie counting to try to reverse the weight gain of the past year. I'd like to drop 10 lbs. I'm still in the healthy BMI range, but just not happy with how I feel. But counting helps control my behavior, so at least I feel better about that.

So it's probably going to be a light season for me this year. Definitely will be under a million. I don't even want to think about the challenges! :(

Edit to add: I didn't realize I was at only about 80k for the season so far. It's going to be a VERY light season.

Former TimbukTOOian checking in.

Lisa, sorry to learn of your struggles, but stuff happens. Don't feel like it is only you. One of the risk factors for getting DVT's, deep vein blood clots, is old age. And, sure enough, I was stricken with a DVT in my upper right leg about two months ago, spent time in the hospital, and am now learning to live with the blood clots and taking Xarelto for the rest of my life. Needless, to say this has been a bummer as far as rowing goes. But I am coming back just like you, but very gradually. My meters for the year are hovering at 100K, about 1/3 of normal. So, if it is any consolation there is another person out there who really likes erging who is likewise not where they want to be. I suspect that in a few months that we both will be doing much better.

Thanks Jim and Lisa for the encouragement! It sounds like you are both doing as well as you can amidst life's inevitable challenges. Lisa you are like a coach with all the constant support you show to people on the forum, I am sure you will hit your stride soon, stick with the PT program. We are all getting to an age where these unwelcome obstacles pop up, let's just keep knocking them down. It sure beats the alternative!

Thanks John!

Good to hear from you, Jim! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles! They don't sound pleasant. Is it dangerous?

Knowing how active you are, it must be really tough to scale back so much. Are you able to do other stuff besides the erging?

Well, we'll all just have to keep doing what we can.

damselfly wrote:Jim! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles! They don't sound pleasant. Is it dangerous?
Lisa, Yes, DVT's are dangerous, and can migrate to the lungs. In my case, the clots are probably permanently in place in my legs. Thousands die every year from pulmonary clots. Xarelto or Coumadin are supposed to prevent more clots from forming. A misconception is that those meds dissolve the current clots. They do not. If one is lucky, the body absorbs them but that is usually only partially true. The clots invariably cause venous valve damage which can result in some permanent swelling of the leg. Compression stockings help with circulation. BTW, my DVT is inexplicable. I think that continual dehydration could have been a factor.
damselfly wrote:Are you able to do other stuff besides the erging?
Some DVT situations are more benign than others. In my case, it laid me pretty low. Pain was intense. Had some serious pain meds in hospital and after getting out. But basically I have no restrictions on activities. It is what I can stand to do. So I am erging, bicycling, mowing the yard, etc - but at levels well below my normal. My fitness sucks. But I am getting better week by week. BTW, I'm not complaining. It's a challenge now. I believe that I can get back to my previous level. But you are right, we all have to keep a realistic perspective and keep trying.

Sorry for the long-winded reply. DVT's are a little weird - not an injury and not a disease, per se. So I decided to be a bit expansive about them and my experience. Hopefully, you all will not ever experience this.

Jim -- I'm glad you explained it in detail. I think it helps us all to understand and have compassion for what others are going through that we may not know about. I know for me my own trials give me a big sense of gratitude for a lot of really little things and I try to keep that at the forefront of my thinking, otherwise my attitude can get nasty really fast.

Rest up, take things at a reasonable pace, and do check back in with us to let us know how things are going. You'll be in my thoughts!
