Hi Mark - you are in just by say Hi! Very welcome. Many of us in the more "mature" age group and a very wide range of interests and levels. Just sign up for the CTC at http://www.c2ctc.com and nominate FF as your club and then put in entries as many times as you want. No judgements or expectations but encouragement for sure. The next Concept2 challenge will have a FF team too and you just have to sign up at the time.Psychopasta wrote:Hi, I'm Mark, a noob to rowing and most all fitness. I'm 59, which makes me 60 next birthday and I want to hit 60 a lot fitter than I am.
Is Forum Flyers a place for me? If so, how do I join, or do I just announce myself?- Mark

Re: Forum Flyers
Hi folks,
I’ve just joined the team and after reading a few pages it seemed right to introduce myself briefly so for a few minutes please indulge me!!!
I’m 51 and on a progressive curve to improve my fitness and lose weight. I played competitive sport (Golf, Cricket, Rugby and Tennis) in my younger days and because of it I was fairly fit but following the loss of my father 16 years ago I let myself go and put on a lot of weight!! Even though I am vertically challenged and carried a lot of extra weight I was still fairly fit but training and sport took a back seat to the family – as it often does! Four years ago I took my blood pressure and resting heart rate and the results shocked me – I was in stroke central with the BP and resting heart rate was mid 70’s. Since that point I’ve lost 112 lbs and I have a further 25 to get to the weight I’d like to get to. My resting heart rate is now floating anything from 49 to 55 and I’m feeling a lot more positive with my blood pressure back down to very good without the need for medication. I knew if I’d gone to the doctors at that point he/she would have put me on tablets!
This past year and a half I’ve been concentrating on cycling (wattbike and Zwift training), I ran my first 10k and ½ marathon in Hawaii in the most incredible heat (I am not a distance runner at all), and now at the point where I want to build my own gym (garage restored) have a Concept Rower and a new Wattbike ATOM I’m about to order. I’m also thinking about getting the SkiErg but I’ll see how that goes! I love to challenge myself and although it took me a decade to sort myself out I am determined more than ever to move into the next part of my life in the best possible way. I hope to contribute in any way I can and love interaction so feel free to say hi or offer advice! You guys know a lot more than I do!
I have never rowed on the water and all my “experience” is from the concept. I’ve managed a HM and a FM – again when I was younger - and there was something about putting the headphones on and losing oneself to the music and strokes. I don’t think I’d do another FM but I would like to train for another HM or two. As a short person I’m never going to pull the times that most of you will but it’s all about challenging yourself right?! I tried to post my PB images last night on my signature but failed miserably!!
Think that’s about it, hope it was ok to post that but it may give you a little insight into me and my fitness fight!! Thanks guys and hope to see you on the other side!!

Re: Forum Flyers
just posted my 500 @1:31.7
Pleased to actually get it done at the moment even if a bit off the pace that I was hoping and it adjusted to 1:19.0 which is pretty OK
I may have to accept the reality that sub 1:30 is a bridge too far at the moment!!
(Terry's 1:42.9 went to 1:19.1 so he will probably be 2nd in the overall "Best Man" category)
Still a few entries needed to fill the 8 spaces though Macroth's 1:20 shows that he still has some power (he is a strongest man type beast)

Re: Forum Flyers
Certainly is a beast Lindsay. As you say, flat out, with no pacing possible - I don't see any other option than getting up to pace as soon as, and then trying to hang on - essentially flying and hoping to not die (too much)! A bit like the 1 min but worse, especially for us 2:00+ slow coaches: we have to hang on for more than 100% more time, whereas you 1:30 guys have it easy
(only 50% more time).
Don't think I rated too high - my 1 min was 37 spm; the 500 was 41, 37, 38, 36, 38, average 38. Henry will probably say the top sprinters start at that and go even higher. It's just that I'm not very good / practised at higher than r30.
Rating that high certainly highlighted some interesting technique variations - key one being to shorten the slide on some strokes: i.e. returning to the catch, I did not return fully to vertical shins - certainly not past vertical shins. It was a balancing act - this would obviously shorten the stroke, but I could start the drive earlier, and, with legs at a nicer angle, and lower heels, I could really get the power down straight away, whereas if too far forward, the leg power definitely comes in more gradually, not instantly.
Perhaps 116 df was too low - I see now I had it at 125 for the 1 min...

Evening all, I've just completed the CTC challenge for April and as a new member to these challenges I'm not sure what to do with regards adding on the CTC site. It asks for a password but I don't have one but i can see my name in the list.
Not a bad first attempt given I'm rowing for the first time in a few years
2,000m 8:48.3
500m 2:06.7
500m 2:04.5
500m 1:59.4
Can definitely improve as the weeks go and endurance and fitness improves. Not a patch on some of you guys but it was fun!!

Nice job of work, Milo! Go to the Cross Team Challenge Discussion Thread in Competition subform and request that “Citroen” (Dougie Lawson) reset your password. Doug monitors the thread and should be able to get you squared away before the end of month.
On further consideration, I should ask if you actually attempted registration @ www.ctc.com and entered name but NOT a password?
