Just a quick check-in. I joined this team in the hopes of making a decent contribution to the current virtual team challenge, and other future challenges. I started off strong (for me), but after my first five days of rowing at the start of this month I ended up with a bad flare up of tendonitis in my wrist that has sidelined me ever since. As soon as the pain and inflammation recede enough for me to get on the erg again I'll do so. I just don't know whether that will end up being this month in time to contribute more to the VTC. Not that anyone's keeping tabs, necessarily, but it's been a big disappointment to have to step down for now, and at least wanted to let the team know what's been going on.

Cheers to all! Go Forum Flyers!

Heather, based on my experience, overuse injuries (tennis elbow, shouider girdle soreness) are more common among indoor rowers than most will admit. An honest self-assessment and rest is preferable to denial. So rest now. There will be more challenges.

Be carefull, your health is number one. And in general rowing just to make meters is not a wise thing. Be wise.

Javk, nice work on the minute.

Best to rest it Heather and live to fight another day.

Sadly I too have been unable to do as much as I would have liked both for the CTC and the January metres challenge, as I've succumbed to the dreaded lurgi since I've returned from overseas trip. The transistion from 30 degrees and mostly sunny to 1 degree and grey and wet never agrees with me

Feeling a bit better today (just in time for work  ) so I'll try and get some metres in before the end of the month for the Team.

ErgData-graphed IRL minute from earlier post:

Only goal was 44spm av. rate. Seemed possible from 46spm av. on 200m chunk of a CTC last summer. Not happening.

What is there to gain from 40+ spm at such pace? No offense intended, just curious if there is method behind the madness.
I can only just hit 36-37spm when I'm wailing on it, which wears me out really quick, but then I'm somewhat overweight.

I'm just back from a 10 day vacation, so I hope to erg myself back in to the team top 10 for this months VTC in a week or so.
I hope you guys will give me a run for my money so we can move the team up a few spots :) .

Sprinting is done with a shorter stroke, but you need to fit enough to keep that going. Very fast sprinttimes are always done at high rate.

I know that, I've had to actively train at 30+ spm pieces in order to get my shorter distances (up to 2k) a bit better,
just haven't found the correct technique that will allow such high rates and result in lower splits.
Rarely manage to get under 1:30 at the drag factor I row at these days.

Next month I hope to pull a few competitive 1k's at the HEK, so I could benefit from some improved sprinting ability.

Its always a matter of moving speed, versus stroke lenght. Its finding the optimum. But in every sport, running, swimming, cycling etc, the shorter the distance tge higher the spm.

Hek? Amersfoort, could be I will be there to. Its open isn,t it?

Yes it is. Never done anything like it before, but they invited my club over so we're probably going with a few people.
Don't expect we'll win anything since I'm the only fanatic erger of the bunch and I'm yet to break the 7 min barrier,
but it's good to have something to work forward to in training.

I have been there one once, low profile race, no pressure, just fine for not overly fanatic rowers. Used to be a 2k also.

Ivan the really short stuff is better with a faster 3/4 stroke - my 1minute for the IRL last night was 348m @1:26.2, sr49
It is a bit of a trick (or maybe skill) that can be learned/trained and is useful up to 500m - my 500 sr is high 30s-40 usually.
if you have a look on the sprint thread here you will see some examples on vid
As Henry said it is a test of fitness as well as technique even with such a short time frame.

Not much is gained in fact. Greatest power output/virtual distance I can produce on an erg for one minute. Old geezer pace X 44 would have yielded a few more meters than old geezer pace X 41. Rate is the multiplier.

Ergohead today, 20 min time trial. http://www.ergohead.nl/en/

Was not overly optimistic, but went ok, was fresh, had taken a few very easy days. 29 men racing in the 40/60 cath.

Started around 1.45, was on 144.8 half way, with 3 min to go 144.7, from there faster, with a fast last minute. Pulling sub 1.25 at the end. Was 9/10 th for most of the race, pulled up to 5th at the end.

Nbr 1 in the 40/50 pulled 1.39 ish. Rating 24/25.
Winner in my cath, 50/60 pulled 142.x 100 meter above me, do zero chance in my current aerobic form.

Also met up with Siebe, who did his first race, think he overshot his race, he pulled from memory 144.9, but was half way a lot faster. Think the race caught up on him. New ergs always feel very easy and light, but thats just feel, you pull what you pull.

For me, it was comfortable uncomfortable, never in trouble and proberly a bit to much left, but had nothing to race for. All in all good enough.
