good numbers for an old guy Mike! It is good to be close to PBs

Many thanks and lovely to hear from you Lindsay. Richard has kept me up to speed with your knee progress ... and hopefully he's reported back that I'm much more expectant of your future erg scores than you are! Best of luck with it all.

Mike - sorry that time runs away with me at present, (even more volunteering as well as the usual stuff). Was doing ok until October but now the 2nd hip needs replacement. My last row was a rubbish 27:10 for 6k on 12 December and I havent been near an ergo since, (might try a slow one on 27 Dec). I love the perfect OCD screen, and really well done on that.

PS I wouldnt be surprised you dont get round to posting all your sessions, but I must try and read about them occasionally.

Good to see you back Susan. Hope your Christmas is going well. Sorry to hear the hip is calling it a day now and pressing for replacement. At least this time you know exactly what to expect and will be able to see your way through a recovey phase back to erging fun. That 6k was nearly a minute off what you were doing in the summer so clearly some current erg fitness is lacking - most unlike you. Hopefully NHS pressures will not delay you too far so that it can all be sorted in 2023. I'm sure you're alert to keeping up with whatever exercise you can manage to slow the decline as far as poss. When I came back from a 3.5 year break at the end of 2016 it took me 18 months to get back to what I thought I should be able to do. You're not quite as old as I was then, but you are getting closer and my experience is that recovery takes a bit more time than it used to as a youngster! All best wishes...

Well Christmas has come and gone again so its another New Year. Where does all that time go? Hope its been a great season for everyone and we're all looking forward to even greater erging fun in 2023.

Latest harder sessions from me:
13/12 RS Sprint Pyramid 250>1k and back with 90"r per 250. Last time blew up on this but tried for the same pace schedule of sub 1:40/42/44/46 and back. Made it this time and ended with a 1:42.9 avg so pretty pleased with that.
17/12 5k TT for the IRL. Wanted sub 19. Set off at 1:53 to see how long I could hold on. Made it all the way with a short sprint at the end for an 18:44.8 at 1:52.4 avg. Good!
20/12 2k TT for the Sub7 ITC. As always set off at 1:45 to see if a sub 7 was on. Answer no! The second half was much too slow though did manage a slight lift at the end so only 7:02.7 at 1:45.6 avg. Better than it might have been, but always disappointing when so far from a sub 7.
23/12 was an SS day, but had been exchanging with Glenn about 100m tactics so decided to give it a go after my 3x3333m SS. First one was a 16.0 so at PB level though felt much slower. Second one was slower still so I stopped it there! I will crack the 16s bogie one day, but clearly need to be fresh.
24/12 4x1k 5r. Last time out avg was 1:47.5. So target was 3x 1:47.5 and see if anything more poss in the last. Managed 1:47.4/1:47.4/1:47.0/1:45.9 for a 1:46.9 avg. Pleased with that. Also hit 224422m for the holiday challenge.
31/12 Should have been 4x1500 5r. Last time avg 1:50.5. Wanted to try for all sub 1:50. Managed 1:50.0 then 1:49.9. Got a nosebleed just over a minute into the 3rd and couldn't sniff enough to keep it under control so had to throw my head back and just paddle in. Disappointed with how readily I grabbed at the excuse to stop! I don't think I had the fight to make it right through at sub 1:50 even without the nosebleed.
3/1 1k TT for the CTC. My usual race plan for this is 200m each at 1:36/7/8/9/40. On target for 600 but a bit slower thereafter so finished with 3:16.3 at 1:38.2avg. Not bad....but probably half a second or so slower than last year.

Mike - if you have a look at the C2CTC just now we are in boat 1 for Sub7 and only just behind 1st place overall. :D Only clocked a 4:22.1 for 1k, but that is fast for me at present.

Ha! One of the joys of posting a time early! Actually by time I looked just now, you were still in Sub7-1 but in 2nd position while I've been bounced down to boat 2 still in dock. Its one of those sad factors of any league system - once you've been in for a while and found your level, that tends to be it. So I'm invariably in one of the lower Sub7 boats and do little more than make up the numbers. Still good to have something different to have a crack at each month though, always so tricky to work out optimal pacing unless its one of the ranking pieces like this month. Best of luck with the other comps...

Harder session update:

7/1 10k TT for the Sub7 ITC. Set off at 1:55/6 and hoped I could stick it out. Lost the will after 6k and backed off to 1:59 for 3k then back on it for the last 1k giving a 38:52.3 total @ 1:56.6 avg. Not what I'd hope for but not too bad given I hate it and only do it a couple of times a year. I was 38:45.6 last year.
10/1 1min TT for the IRL. Target as always 350+. Managed 354m @ 1:24.7. Should have done better as I had a powerful start and held steady to halfway, but then slipped a bit on the seat and from then on it wasn't nearly as good (on top of the expected fade). Shame but a good result considering.
12/1 Blood doning session.
14/1 3x2k 5r. Last time avg pace was 1:51.7. Set target as sub 1:54 and managed 1:54; 1:53.7 and 1:53.4 for 1:53.7 overall. Pleased with that being so close to the blood letting.
20/1 1min TT for the IRL. Was very late home and had no time really so just did the 1min before my shower. Much better paced and controlled than last time, but at no point had the same power for some reason and ended with only 353m. Oh well!
21/1 30 min TT. Looking at the Nonathlon I realised that I still hadn't done a 30 piece at full chat this year. I thought it normally came up in the challenges, but its not in the Sub7 ITC or IRL and no one has chosen it for the CTC. I assume it must have been one of the FMMC league pieces when that was running. Anyway thought I'd better set a score of some sort. Plan was 10 mins each at 1:54/55/56. 1:54s were fine, had to give myself a stern talking to halfway through the 1:55s but did hang on to it, only to blow at the start of the 1:56s. Stuck to it at mostly 1:58s and with a short sprint at the end got to 7811m @ 1:55.2avg so not too far off target in the end.

Thought I'd pop in to see if anyone's about.

Anyone who has a current British record, check out my thread in 'Competition'. C2 uk have dropped the ball, is the politest way I can put it just incase Dougie is still alive :D

For my part not really been training for competition for the last couple of years but have been ticking over knocking out 50-70 k a month with whatever comes along. Starting to feel the love a bit, which got me looking at the 65-69 BR for 2k, so may have a tilt at that sometime post March when I turn 65.

All the best to those still about, may start joining in some of the challenges again.

Great to see you back Richard - and even better to hear that you are still putting in so much seat time. Having not seen your name at a few of the more recent competitions I thought you may have decided to stop. I did look at your twitter a few months ago but saw that you're no longer posting your training there.

I'm obvs still here, Susan (TPK) pops in from time to time and I know Marjorie still visits the forum occasionally although doesn't usually post in this thread. Otherwise, Sub7 seem to exist entirely on the Faceborg nowadays and I don't do that so have no idea what they're up to. I hear that Casey has changed job and is a bit less active in the club than he used to be.

Intersting point you've seen on the BRs. I'm still in regular contact with Richard Steventon so I'll suggest he checks his. Hopefully Marjorie will see your post to check hers.

Very best of luck with the new 2k record attempt....

Oooops looks like I'm not even posting the harder sessions now - lazy lazy lazy! Been a bit mixed as ever but a couple of better sessions this week so just the usual vagaries of form over time I suppose.

24/1 6x500 2r. Target 1:44 start and neg. Managed that for a 1:42.9 avg. Not my best but back on course.
28/1 4x1k 5r. Last time 1:46.9 avg. Set off @ 1:46.9 with slight neg for a 1:46.3 avg. Good!
31/1 10x1min 1r. Fail! Only managed 3x at target of 303m then stopped.
3/2 30r20 for the Sub7 ITC. Target 7727m. Only held pace for first split then had to slow for 7637m. Very poor.
7/2 3/2:30/2/1:30/1 1r for the CTC. Target pace <1:45/4/3/2/1. Hit the first 3, but 4th 1:44.8 before a faster 5th @ 1:39. All I had on the day and 2894m probably as good as I can do so happy enough.
12/2 30r20 for the Sub7 ITC attempt 2. Made it half way this time before having to slow and even worse total of 7556. Oh dear!
14/2 5x1402 5r. Used the Carol Mc row as a long interval workout. Used the first as a WU and last as a CD - middle three @ 1:49.9/1:49.8/1:48.8 of which the last was posted as a 5:05.1 time. Happy with that.
18/2 2k TT for the IRL. Managed a 7:02.9 before Christmas. Set off to better that, but didn't even get half way before slowing dramatically. Then got cross with myself and did the last 600 at a decent pace to recover to a 7:07.0. Disappointed but could have been much worse!
21/2 10x1min 1r. Trying again for 303s following the fail on 31/1. Managed them all with a faster last for a 3041 total. Very pleased with that!
22/2 30r20 for the Sub7 ITC. Third go...but held it together this time at a steady 1:57 for a 7708 total @ 1:56.8avg. A decent total for me....Phew!

Time for an update on the harder sessions:

25/2 2k TT for the IRL - Second attempt. Better but no cigar - still had a very poor third 500 but recovered well at the end for a 7:02.6 - a SB.
4/3 6x1k 1r for the CTC. Plan was to pace at 1:54/1:53/1:53/1:52/1:52/1:51 for a 1:52.5 avg. Managed that or better for 22:49.9 @ 1:52.0. Good!
7/3 8x500m 3:30r. Last time avg was 1:41.9 which was a bit frightening so set off at 1:42.5 with a plan for slight neg. Managed that for a 1:41.4 avg, so next time I really will have to try to do all sub 1:42. Oooer!
10/3 1k TT for the Sub7 ITC and World Sprints. My plan for these is always 200m each at 1:36/7/8/9/40. Was more or less there for 2/3 but then completely caved for some reason and paddled in - shame. 3:33.2
11/3 1k TT for the Sub7 ITC and World Sprints. Take two! This time stuck to plan and managed 3:15.8 which is exactly the same as last year. Wooohooo! That time netted me bronze last year, and currently has me in silver. However, its only 13th in the rankings so there's any number of people out there who could put in a time and demote me. We'll see!
