Daunting

Post by just27 » May 7th, 2019, 7:07 pm

Oh, this is so daunting. I've been opting for more ride meters, than row meters, in the past year ... so, figured I should not aspire to a rowing half-marathon. So, I checked the challenge rules and, gasp, one needs to bike 50,000 meters, for a half marathon ride. Did I say daunting?!

Century!
Congratulations, Greg F, on being one of 17 people in the Concept2 Universe to complete a century. And you did it in less than 4 hours. WOW !
Thanks for the shoutout!

Phew that was a fun workout (even if my butt fully disagree with that). That was the most workout I did by far these past 15 years and that felt awesome. Was wondering if I could do it for a while and when I saw the challenge I decided to try it out, almost gave up after 70'000m but I was too far in to stop. Don't think I'll do that again anytime soon :D .
Awesome, well done...!

And hey, can we have our warm weather back...!

Cheers, Baz B)

50K meters is daunting. But you're always up for a challenge, Minnie! Better make a good binge-watch Netflix selection.

We do get caught up in the Challenges - and sometimes you might find yourself doing more erging than you originally planned..or is maybe "good" for you to do. Or perhaps, like bg, you might be focusing on a different goal - one that is less supported by total dedication to the erg as your main exercise. There are so many Challenges throughout the erging year...do the ones that work for you!

I've surely fueled the competitive flames here and there (it's what I do!) to get teammates into the mix for Challenges - and I'm usually right there with you! Not so this time as I have developed osteoarthritis in my right knee - a rather sudden occurrence it seems, and it appears that I am a reactor to cortisone. The bike erg is a good answer for me on this - and I am determined to get my half century in sometime this year.

Finally!!! After a back injury I've done my first row in a little over 8 months. So good to get just 5 minutes under my belt and as long as there's no reaction I can add rowing back to my workout regime and steadily increase time and distance! Phew!
Woo Hoo!
Welcome back.
Slow and steady coming back - so as not to re-injure yourself.

David
Thanks david, slow and steady for sure. Just the bike tonight but hopefully both tomorrow!

Image And the beat goes on!!

Congratulations, Ed, on completing your 5th half marathon of the Challenge!

Speaking of things still going on....snow. Two inches of snow sitting on the deck rails this AM, and lots of amorphous tarps stretched over the budding flowers. Sigh. We'll see if the Whoville flowers make it this year (aka the purple alliums). More freeze advisories tonight...what a strange state this is.

HALF Marathon:

Congratulations to Ed on half marathon #6 and Andrew on half marathon # 4 for the Maracentury Challenge...not that they won't be completing half marathons throughout the year!

HALF CENTURY:

By the way, Minnie, I did note that there is this little Challenge called the Solstice (June 21) that requires 21K throughout the day by ski or row, and 42K throughout the day for a bike erg. 42K is not so far from 50K...so if you want to work up to a half century (as I do...), there's an opportunity coming to an erg near you.

WELCOME to new teammate Corey!

Last year I only got on the rower four times, and did not log a metre. I have definitely not been looking after my health, no exercise other than a little social table tennis and the odd bike ride at the weekend.

But I received a reminder from Concept2 about the Maracentury challenge, and the start of a new season. And so I thought I would try to use the Timezone advantage I have to log 10k or so and be briefly on the world leader board. The row was just like old times, but I was nowhere near the top of the board, huge numbers did marathons and 100k sessions on the 1st. I revised my goal to do a marathon during the challenge.i did it that night. There is something about mental attitude that makes a huge difference, my first ever marathon took more than 15 years of rowing to achieve when I was younger and healthier, and I nearly gave up so many times, would have if a friend had not been watching me. The one last week, i somehow never doubted my ability to finish, it was not physically easy, but no problem mentally.

So I revised my goal again, and decided I wanted one of each of the half, full, 50k and 100k. The 50k I found time for last weekend, and managed, however the rowing to that point has led to serious chaffing, which is not healing much. I’ve managed to fit in a few halfs during the week, more or less training.

Today is the only time in my calendar I Have to attempt the 100k. I am writing this message because I can think of so many good reasons not to do it, or to pull out. The only payoff I get if I succeed is my name on a downloadable certificate, and a sense of awe at accomplishing a stretch goal. And I have added to that avoiding coming back to this forum to explain why I pulled out :)

So if you read this in the next 8 or so hours, send thoughts of encouragement to a fellow loon.....

Thanks Dan!

Well, I really did regret putting that post up, I beat my previous times for the marathon and the 50k, and could have stopped at either for a win. Things went downhill from there, and it turned into a real slog.

I won’t go into details, other than to say to anyone else thinking of the 100 to get their conditioning right first.

I was slow, i had to get off the rower at 70, 80 and 90 k marks for toilet breaks, but I finished.

No great view from up here though, Dan, the world looks just the same. But given a little time to recover, I am sure I a going to feel a little better about myself. And I would not have made it without the Lunatics, you all inspire me to push myself.
