Alternatives to HR-based training

Post by mrpeepers » August 6th, 2012, 5:05 pm

Folks,

I'm putting together my training calendar for the next 6 months and wanted to see if anyone was aware of substitutes for the typical HR-based training regimens. I've had a lot of trouble in the last year or so with the HR-based approach, principally because of several factors. For one, the temperature range of my workout environment is pretty varied, such that on some days, a 20-minute 155 bpm piece that would normally be in UT1 feels more like AT. For another, my mix of workouts has tended to focus on OTW training, which has a different set of training bands associated with different intensities.

I realize this question may sound insane, but it's a real one.

Lactate testing

Much more difficult, expensive, and time consuming, but also much more precise.
PBs: 2k 6:09.0 (2020), 6k 19:38.9 (2020), 10k 33:55.5 (2019), 60' 17,014m (2018), HM 1:13:27.5 (2019)

Old PBs: LP 1:09.9 (~2010), 100m 16.1 (~2010), 500m 1:26.7 (~2010), 1k 3:07.0 (~2010)

The Pete Plan is based on past performance not HR

Same with Wolverine Plan. It is a progressive plan based on past results, not heart rate.
