Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Well, I just made a PB for 10k. 40:38.1 (2:01.9/500) was my finishing time, which is a 47-second improvement over my old PB.
The funny thing is I'm feeling somewhat subdued. I hadn't really gone hard over 10k for a while, and I ended up underestimating myself. I decided to shoot for 2:04 for the first 5k, but I ended up drifting into the 2:03s, but still feeling a bit too good. The last 2k split was 1:57.2/500, for instance. My last strokes were in the high 1:30s. I just had too much left.
(Skip this bit if you're not into autobiographies.) After a tough August with a spot of flu I went off the boil a bit, but I've been enjoying the training more than ever in the last few months and I'm rowing 10 times a week now in a somewhat-loose three-week plan I've devised for myself, and feeling good and strong, and not at all overtrained.
So anyway, I'm looking forward to giving the 10k another shot in a few weeks and hopefully I'll measure it out better. Sub-2:00/500 before the end of the calendar year is the big target.

Dumped 47 and on the hunt for 38. I understand it's a long row and there's a multiplier therein but those are really big jumps in split time also, aren't they? Particularly when pulling sub 2'? Make it happen, Dan. Jack

11/22/14
500m = 1:28.7 - previous 1:32, about 11.5 % watts gain
11/24/14
1,000m = 3:08.1 - previous 3:13.2, about 8% watts gain
Next test will be 2k, possible 5k

Dont shoot me for this, as i am a newb and in the process of honing my form before i do another PB.
BUT i am very proud that i was finally to do low drag low rate at a longer row, 5K.
It all starts somewhere.

Just trained on stroke rate and low drag again. First time trying 5k at 2:00 / 500m.
Broke my previous best by 10 seconds. Only 3.4 seconds left and i will be within the 20 minutes!

Pete Lunchtime: hard distance. 500m warmup and 2500 wdown. Rate 20 is starting to produce some power output improvement but also conserving my limited aerobic capacity thru these test pieces. I do let the rate float up and relax stroke force for a bit of enroute relaxation when faced with the redline but then I manage to crank it back up for a time. DId that intentionally on three occasions in this piece. I think I'm starting to get smarter at limiting the damage when I get in over my head. 50+ seconds off previous best. Makes me sound lazy but the 5K has been a tricky distance for me. There is a 5K in every 6K but the many 6Ks I've done didn't seem to give me much clue to the 5. Jack

Nice job! Now go back and take a screen shot so you can break it down and develop a plan for your next PR attempt. Always have a plan and keep working hard.
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
And i still did it in a kind of workout mode. Rate was still relatively low (23 for the whole). In a couple of weeks i will go for a serious attack on one of my distances.Edward4492 wrote:Nice job! I have all my rows broken down in splits in RowPro. Beside the rower is a piece of paper on the wall with all my 'ranked' distances and times.
So i have motivation all around me =)

A Pete Lunchtime: hard distance over 5K. 500 warmup; 2500 wdown. It's out of order in the week's progression but I didn't think I had the juice to start this week with 8X500 intervals. May have been wrong; it's a PB altho full of redlining and rate dialbacks. Lungs are the weakest link. 26.4" off the old one. Jack

Looks like things are going well, Jack!
Just went 14,504 metres (2:04.1/500m) for the hour, which is a PB by 237 metres. (Old PB was 14267 = 2:06.1/500m.)
Felt a bit sluggish from about 15 minutes onward, and even sickly in the last 15 minutes, so looking forward to putting in a better score when I try again in a few weeks after some good, smart work.

7422 meters in 30 minutes; beating my previous record by 125 meters with ease.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Ah! The heady days of being on the way up. For me, it was about 10 years ago. I had just had open heart surgery (aortic valve replacement and 3X CABG). I had never felt that weak in my whole life before, so I figure that I was about at the bottom. Starting from that point, there were lots of PBs, with an occasional WR to spice it up, giving an old man the illusion that he could still do something. By 2006, the peak was over and the steady downhill commenced. For a few years, it seemed gradual enough, but the slope got a lot steeper about 3 years ago. Ah well, it was a fun time while it lasted.
